PROJECT:
FAILING FLESH
In a time that we say that
every possible combination of notes and sounds, of ideas and melodies,
has been already played, that we have tasted every aspect of music, there
are bands like Project: Failing Flesh provoking us with their compositions.
A kind of music that is a perfect balance between their influences and
some innovative elements and all these filtered through their personal
perception. They create music that can't pass unnoticed and will surely
intrigue you all! So, here we have Tim to throw some light on everything
regarding this great band!
1.GREAT ALBUM! HOW LONG DID IT
TAKE YOU TO COMPOSE THE SONGS AND HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO ACHIEVE SUCH A
CRYSTAL CLEAR PRODUCTION?
TIM) Thanks alot! Glad you liked
it. It took us a couple years working on and off to get it to the point
where the songs were finished. The production was just knowing what we
were after and having the time to get it right. Kevin is responsible for
most of how it sounds. He runs and owns his own studio and is really on
top of the sonic aspect of this stuff.
2.IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN YOUR ALBUM "A
BEAUTIFUL SICKNESS" IS A SELF FINANCED RELEASE. WHY HAVE YOU DECIDED TO
DO SO? IS IT BECAUSE YOU WANTED TO HAVE ABSOLUTE FREEDOM AND NO LABEL INTERFERING
WITH YOUR MUSIC?
TIM) Yeah, we did it all out of
pocket. Granted we have a bit of an easier situation as far as studio work
goes but it also throws delays at us. Waiting for empty or free studio
days so we can work are few and far between at times. When we started we
weren't thinking about labels or even knowing if we were going to release
it. We just kept going in and coming up with more and more stuff. It was
nice to have that freedom of no deadline or goal.
3.AFTER THE RELEASE OF THIS ALBUM,
I CAN IMAGINE THAT YOU WILL HAVE MANY PROPOSALS FROM LABELS. WELL, HAVE
YOU DECIDED WHERE YOU'D LIKE TO SIGN TO OR AT LEAST WITH WHAT CRITERIA
WILL YOU SELECT THE LABEL?
TIM) We've received a handful so
far. We just signed with Karmageddon Media(ex-Hammerheart)for Europe. They
will be releasing "A Beautiful Sickness" with a couple others to possibly
follow. We're still trying to line up a North American deal. But we are
pretty happy to have hooked up with Karmageddon as they've done a lot of
cool releases in their history and can hopefully help us attract more listeners.
4.MUSICALLY YOU BROUGHT TO MY MIND
BANDS LIKE DEATH, KREATOR AND CONTROL DENIED. DO YOU AGREE THAT THESE BANDS
ARE AMONGST YOUR INFLUENCES?
TIM) Sure! Those are bands we like
a lot and, in the case of Death and Kreator, grew up on. I'd say some elements
of those two bands are probably evident in some way in our sound. As well
as tons of other influences that have rubbed off on us during our years
as music fans. Like any other band we're a combination of our influences.
5.SOMETHING THAT IS VERY OBVIOUS IS
THAT YOU LIKE TO EXPERIMENT WITH EXTREME METAL. DO YOU BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE
WILL ACCEPT THESE EXPERIMENTATIONS OF YOURS? THE USE OF VIOLA IN SOME SONGS
BROUGHT TO MY MIND A BAND CALLED BELIEVER. DO YOU KNOW THEM?
TIM) Yeah, we like to throw other
stuff in there to keep it interesting. I hope people will accept a good
portion of it. Metal fans are alot more open these days and the use of
keys and classical style instruments has been done in the genre before
so maybe it's not so strange to them anymore. No, I haven't had a chance
to hear Believer yet. I've read a couple reviews of ours where other guys
have said there are similarities too. I'd like to hear them! What CD would
be a good place to start?
6.PROJECT: FAILING FLESH IS A BIZARRE
CHOICE FOR A BAND NAME. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SAY WITH IT? IS IT PERHAPS
A GATHERING OF WORDS THAT TRY TO DESCRIBE US HUMANS AND HOW WE ABUSE OUR
SOULS AND BODIES?
TIM) It's pretty close to your
description!! The name represents the failing of mankind- physically, mentally,
and socially. Brought on by any number of factors like the aging process,
illness, self-infliction, isolation, abuses, science, nature, etc.
7.ANOTHER PART I WANT TO STAND TO ARE
THE LYRICS, WHICH ARE VERY INTERESTING. CAN YOU GIVE US A GENERAL
IDEA FOR WHAT YOU LIKE TO TALK ABOUT AND WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEM?
TIM) Most were from a ton of lyric
sheets I had written for us to work from. Eric and Kevin were responsible
for throwing in some cool shit that complimented that stuff too. The subjects
are pretty wide ranging but all tie into our name in a way. Not that it's
a concept by any means but alot of it, is related to that.
8.DOES THE SONG "9MM MOVIE" SPEAK ABOUT
ONE OF THE BIGGEST PERVERSITIES OF HUMANITY, LIKE WATCHING SNUFF MOVIES?
DO YOU THINK THAT HUMANITY IS ADDICTED TO VIOLENCE? DO WE "CONSUME" VIOLENCE?
TIM) Yeah, that's totally what
it's about. I think by nature humans are attracted to violence. Whether
you're violent or a non-violent person everyone has it in them to different
extents so maybe that's why people can relate to violent entertainment.
So... I guess you could say we "consume" it. I know I personally do. A
large percentage of the media or art out there is filled with it and I
doubt people will reject it anytime soon.
9.WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COVER VENOM'S
"WARHEAD"? WHICH OTHER BANDS WOULD YOU LIKE TO COVER AND WHY?
TIM) We love that song and thought
it would fit in well with what we are doing. We just wanted to have fun
with it and pay respect to Venom. We weren't out to top their version or
anything. They are just a huge early influence. There are so many bands
I'd love to cover but we probably wont do another one for awhile. If we
did I'd like to do something by Swans, Hirax, Cop Shoot Cop, Possessed,
Entombed, Queensryche, or a bunch more!
10.HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO COOPERATE
WITH ERIC FOREST(VOIVOD, E-FORCE)? HAS PROJECT:FAILING FLESH BECOME NOW
HIS PRIORITY?
TIM) No, Eric's main band is E-Force
but he was also a part of why we sound like we do. He was cool enough to
get invloved with us and did a great job and we knew he had E-Force when
we contacted him. We still hope to continue working with him in the future
though! It's not so odd these days for members to have a number of different
projects to keep themselves creatively busy with.
11.WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE THAT
DOESN'T KNOW YOU, IN ORDER TO INTRIGUE HIS INTEREST? WHICH IS YOUR MOST
APPEALING ELEMENT ACCORDING TO YOU?
TIM) Hmmm.. I don't know. We couldn't
really claim to be some new sort of music or something nobody has ever
heard before so I guess if someone likes alot of different heavy variety
mixed together with a modern and somewhat strange format they may dig us.
12.IF YOUR MUSIC WERE AN EMOTION, WHAT
WOULD IT BE? IF IT WERE A PAINTING, WHAT WOULD IT SHOW?
TIM) An emotion? Maybe underlying
turmoil or anger. A painting? Maybe the human body and brain in a point
of decline.
13.LET'S SUPPOSE THAT WE LIVE IN A
WORLD WITHOUT MUSIC. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IN SUCH A CASE?
TIM) Well, I would certainly have
alot more free time. Maybe Kevin and I would have to start recording prank
phone calls to keep ourselves entertained haha. (ala US TV show Crankyankers
or the Jerky Boys).
14.IF YOU WERE A FLY, WHERE WOULD YOU
LIKE TO BE AND WHY?
TIM) If I were a fly I'd like to
sitting on Katie Holmes nipple haha. Why? Because she is so damn hot! Although,
now that I think about it, can I be a tongue on her nipple instead of a
fly!?
15.IN WHICH MOVIE SOUNDTRACK WOULD
YOU LIKE TO HAVE TAKEN PART OR HAVE COMPOSED?
TIM) "Lost Highway." That is a
great soundtrack. Or maybe one of the ones Ulver participated in. I am
really a huge fan of the work those guys have done and can't say enough
good stuff about their talent.
16.THANK YOU! HAVE I FORGOTTEN TO ASK
YOU ANYTHING AND YOU'D LIKE TO MENTION?
TIM) Thanks alot Nick. Much success
to you and Behind the Veil!! Watch for our CD on Karmageddon in Europe
soon. US readers can still order the limited advance through our site.
