SCARRED
MIND
Belgium is not a country
known for its heavy metal scene. SCARRED MIND on the other hand claim that
play Belgian Thrash Metal. What kind of genre is this? How does it sounds?
If you want to find the answers to those and many other questions we did
here, you have just to read the text that follows....
1.FIRST OF ALL POINT OUT THE MOST
IMPORTANT MOMENTS OF THE BAND'S HISTORY AND INTRODUCE YOURSELVES TO THE
READERS...
-
Johny (vocals) and Chris (guitar) started
the band in 1999 with some old friends, at first it was just for fun, playing
covers. But later on, it got more serious, we decided to play our own songs
and due to this the line up changed and some more motivated people joined
the band. Ibanez our drummer joined the band in 2000, a highly motivated
youngster with some good quality’s. Bert joined the band in 2001, first
as a bass player, later on as second guitarist, he is the one with the
most experience, playing in several bands like Bobby Peru & Aggressive
Culture . Last one to join is Tom on bass, since 2002. I think that during
the last year where getting along very well.
2.FILL US IN ON THE BAND'S RELEASES.
YOU RELEASED AWHILE AGO A 10 TRACK DEMO. GIVE US SOME INFO... WHERE WAS
IT RECORDED, HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO FINISH IT, WHO WAS THE PRODUCER,
ETC. ARE YOU SATISFIED BY THE FINAL RESULT? DO YOU THINK YOU MANAGED TO
FIND YOUR PERSONAL SOUND?
-
We released a demo in 2OO1, it
is a five track demo, made in a cheap studio in a very short period of
time, so obviously it's not really up to standard but that's what makes
it a demo, we also have 2 songs on a compilation CD called “ Belgian metal
revolution part 1. This summer we went to the CCR studio’s in Zulte ( Belgium)
to record our 10 track debut CD. Production is done by ourselves and Chris
from the studio. We’re quite satisfied with the CD, considering we had
only 10 days of studio time.
3.YOU DESRCIBE YOUR STYLE AS BELGIAN
THRASH METAL.
SINCE I HAVEN'T LISTENED TO YOUR
MUSIC, I CAN'T
EXPRESS MY VIEWS. SO, THRAHS METAL
I UNDERSTAND, BUT WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SUGGEST WITH BELGIAN? WHICH IS THIS
SPECIFIC ELEMENTS YOU IMPLY WITH THIS TERM? NAME SOME OF YOUR MOST BELOVED
BANDS AND ALBUMS.
-
Most of all it’s a mixture of several
styles not really thrash, but like we say Belgian thrash. Some people call
it thrash, hardcore, others call it thrash with a hardcore edge, maybe
because of influences from our favourite bands like Slayer, Slipknot
, Hatebreed, Pro-pain, Pantera etc. To put it simple: we play thrash metal
and we're from Belgium so that makes it Belgian thrash metal. Incidently,
you can listen to some mp3 samples on www.scarredmind.tk
4.YOU SAY IN YOUR BIO THAT YOU HAD
MANY LINE UP
CHANGES BEFORE YOU MANAGED TO GET
TO THE POINT YOU ARE NOW. SO HOW, DIFFICULT IS IT AFTER ALL TO FORM A BAND
THAT ALL THE MEMBERS CAN GET ALONG WELL AND COOPERATE?
-
I think we had the same problems like
any other starting band. Getting along wasn’t the problem, guy’s quitting
the band due to lack of time, motivation etc. Not everybody can put the
same amount of time in a band. To get a band complete is already difficult,
to get five people together who are equally motivated is even harder and
to find 5 people who also get along well is a matter of pure luck so I
guess you can say we're quite a lucky band.
5.WHERE ARE YOUR LYRICS REFERRING TO
AND HOW IMPORTANT ARE THEY FOR YOU? WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO WRITE LYRICS
AND WHAT CAN TAKE THE INSPIRATION AWAY FROM YOU?
-
Most of the lyrics have a story of
it’s own, but in the end ,if you put them all together , you’ll see that
it’s the story of someone who’s struggling to keep alive, due to
all bad influences staying in one piece and not to kill anybody.
6.YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO PERFORM LIVE
ALONG WITH SOME REALLY GREAT METAL BANDS. HOW DO YOU VALUE THESE LIVE EXPERIENCES
AND WHICH SHOW OF YOURS (WITH WHICH BAND) DO YOU THINK WAS THE BEST AND
WHICH ONE THE WORST? WHY?
-
It was very cool to play with bands
like Tankard, Reign of terror etc. They were all a good experience for us.
All kinds of different crowds, but it seems that most of them appreciated
our music. We try to make every show worth while, for us and for the audience.
Playing with other bands is always more fun, you get to learn new people,
get to know some new bands and often we can help each other out on gigs,
recordings etc... I don't really care if it's a famous band or an obscure
underground band we play with, as long as it's fun. The worst experience
so far was playing a gig at 2.00 am which should have started at 11.30
pm; by that time most people already left the venue. To make things even
worse the police showed up and shut us down at 2.45pm. Talk about lousy
organisation! However the few people that remained were very enthousiastic,
so it was'nt all bad...
7.DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR LIVE SHOWS?
WHOCH ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?
-
Shows for next year are being planned,
and there is a small chance that we’re going on a short European tour.
8.WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE THAT
DOESN'T KNOW YOU, IN ORDER TO INTRIGUE HIS INTEREST? WHICH IS YOUR MOST
APPEALING ELEMENT ACCORDING TO YOU?
-
I think our music isn’t to difficult
to understand, Its very listenable music. But our strongest element is
our live performance, we make sure that there is not only the music to
listen to, but that there is visual aspect as well. Not that whe use gimmicks
on stage, its pure energy.
9.IF YOUR MUSIC WERE AN EMOTION, WHAT
WOULD IT BE? IF IT WERE A PAINTING, WHAT WOULD IT SHOW?
-
I guess it wouldn't be a very nice
emotion since most of the lyrics are about death, murder, psychiatric wards
and so on. If it were a painting it would be really ugly with all the nutcases
and serial killers in it, for me a Jeroen Bosch painting probably would
fit best to our music. Never the less, we think a live band should be fun
to watch so we try not to take ourselves to seriously.
10.WHICH DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST AND
WHICH THE WORST PART IN YOUR MUSIC, ACCORDING TO YOU? WHERE DO YOU THINK
YOU NEED FURTHER IMPROVEMENT?
-
I think the band always is in need
for improvement, but we’re still learning, and I think we will keep on
learning until we stop. The best parts for me are the catchy riffs and
the pounding effect created by bass & drums. We could do with some
improvement with the playing itself though; sometimes we can really fuck
up a song but hey, that's what rehearsing is for, isn't it?
11.ARE YOU SARISFIED BY THE FEETBACK
YOU GOT THIS FAR? IS THERE AN ELEMENT OR A DESCRIPTION THAT YOU SEE GETTING
REPEATED IN ALMOST ALL THE REVIEWS YOU
RECEIVE?
-
We’re still growing, and it will take
some time, but we’re patient , and the reviews we’re getting are very promising
We get good reactions from our gigs, on our guestbook as well as from people
who come to us after the show telling us they really liked our stuff. For
me that's the biggest satisfaction.
12.YOU ARE IN A SEARCH OF A LABEL.
DID YOU HAVE ANY
INTEREST TILL NOW? WITH WHAT CRITERIA
WILL YOU SELECT THE LABEL YOU WILL SIGN WITH?
-
We have a label who is interested
in us, but we’re still working on the deal. The most important for us is
that the album gets distributed, so everybody can find it in his record
store.
13.LET'S SUPPOSE THAT WE LIVE IN A
WORLD WITHOUT
MUSIC. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IN SUCH
A CASE?
-
I don’t know, fishing maybe? start
making music
14.IN WHICH MOVIE SOUNDTRACK WOULD
YOU LIKE TO HAVE TAKEN PART OR HAVE COMPOSED?
-
Braveheart. I know its classic music,
and our music does not fit to that movie, but the soundtrack is really
great.
15.WHY DID YOU NAME THE BAND SCARRED
MIND? FROM WHICH FACTS OR THINGS ARE YOUR MINDS SCARRED?
-
Everyone in the band has his own history,
good and bad memories. What I mean is, everything we’ve been through in
our lives so far has left some scars in our minds . I think that
counts for everybody in life, that’s why the band is called Scarred Mind.
