SEDITION
-
SEDITION'S
MUSIC IS AN EXCELLENT SAMPLE OF HEAVY/SPEED METAL. THEY COME FROM AUSTRALIA,
BUT I THINK WITH THEIR MUSIC OFFERS THEM THE POWER TO CONQUER THE WORLD...
1.GIVE US A SHORT BAND BIO. WHO ARE
THE CURRENT BAND MEMBERS?
-
Sinclair Newey: guitars, Simon Kelly:
drums, Judd Newton: guitars/vocals, Bruce Vines: bass. Since the
release of Arcane Secrets, our drummer Tyrrell Beck left the band.
We couldn't find another that suited us so Simon switched from playing
guitar to drums ( he used to play drums ). Judd already knows how to play
guitar so he now plays and sings.
2.HOW HAVE YOU CHOSEN THE NAME
"SEDITION"? DOES IT HAVE A SPECIAL MEANING FOR YOU?
-
Tyrrell, our old, drummer chose the
name. If you look the meaning up in the dictionary it is quite well
suited to a heavy metal band. It has no special meaning for me.
It sounds cool though.
3.YOUR LYRICS ARE VERY DARK.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEM? CAN YOU EXPLAIN TO ME ESPACIALLY THE LYRICS
OF "THE DARK HALF"? IS IT INSPIRED BY THE STEPHEN KING'S NOVEL?
-
I write most of the lyrics. As
for them being dark, I suppose negative subject matter inspires me
more than positive subject matter. I like watching the news and I
am interested in current affairs in Australia and overseas... and the news
is full of humankind's evil doings.
-
The Dark Half was sort of inspired
by Stephen King's book. I picked it up in a store one day because
the title caught my attention. I read the blurb on the back and gave
it a quick scan, but that is all. I wrote the main guts of the song
on the strength of the title. I will read the novel some day though.
4.I'D LIKE NOW TO TALK FOR ANOTHER
SONG OF YOURS UNDER THE TITLE "ABSOLUT POWER", WHICH IS VERY TIMELY AFTER
THE TERRORIST ATTACK OF 11TH OF SEPTEMBER AND THE BOMBING AGAINST AFGANISTAN
BY THE AMERICANS. HOW WAS THIS SONG INSPIRED? DO YOU BELIEVE THAT FOR THE
MASSACRE OF 11TH OF SEPTEMBER ARE ONLY THE TERRORISTS RESPONSIBLE OR DO
YOU THINK THAT THE U.S.A. POLITIC APPROACH IS ALSO RESPONSIBLE?
-
'Absolute Power' was written
about governments in countries around the world that have the right to
order genocide AND Indonesia's bloody occupation of East Timor. I
don't know if you know, but Australian journalists were killed the Indonesian
invasion and our government did nothing. It also took a week for
our government to send in our army to protect the East Timorese after the
UN ran referendum resulted in large scale killings in East Timor.
I went along to protests to persuade our government to help them.
-
The Sept 11 thing is complicated and
I don't wan't to say to much, but... there are things I disagree with about
America's involvement in foreign conflicts and there are some I agree with.
The destruction of the WTC buildings was shocking for me and I am sad that
people have to die so someone else can make a point. I don't like
George Bush as a president.
5.I THINK THAT YOUR ALBUM IS
SELF FINANCED. CAN YOU TELL US WHICH ARE THE MAIN DIFFICULTIES THAT A BAND
WITHOUT A CINTRACT HAS TO FACE IN ORDER TO RELEASE A FULL - LENGTH CD?
6.LATELY I LISTENED TO SOME
INTERESTING BANDS FROM THERE. CAN YOU TELL US HOW THINGS GO DOWN THERE?
-
Australia's population isn't large
enough to support healthy sized subcultures. But, heavy metal fans
are the most dedicated and loyal music listeners out there so the little
amount of support goes a long way. There are some awesome bands over
here and I hope things pick up.
7.DID YOU HAVE ANY OFFER OR
INTEREST FROM A LABEL?
-
We did once but they turned out to
be bogus.
8.WHICH WERE THE REACTIONS OF
THE FANS AND PRESS ON YOUR RELEASE? WHICH WAS THE BEST AND WHICH WAS THE
WORST REVIEW YOU HAVE RECEIVED?
-
We are very well received at live shows
and the CD went down well too. The best review was in a newspaper
and the worst was a chick coming up to me after a gig and telling me, "that
was the worst music she had ever heard". She musta been into Brittney Spears.
9.WHICH SONG OF YOURS DO YOU
THINK IS THE MOST IDEAL TO REPRESENT YOUR WORK AND WHY?
-
'The Final Sign' because it is dramatic,
dynamic and has everthing I like in a song; acoustic guitars, solos, riffs,
keyboards, enviromental sound FX, screaming vocals and a catchy chorus.
10.HOW ARE YOU PLANNING TO PROMOTE
YOUR WORK? WILL YOU DO ANY LIVE SHOWS? CAN YOU DESCRIBE A TYPICAL SEDITION
SHOW?
-
We are still in training at the moment
because of our lineup change but we want to do an east coast tour of Austalia
when we release our next CD. WorldWide we rely on fanzine and websites
like this one! Sedition performing live are very energetic, lots
of bangin' hedz and hair flyin' around.
11.WHICH IS THE BEST PART IN
YOUR MUSIC AND IN THE BAND IN GENERAL AND WHICH THING DO YOU THINK YOU
SHOULD CORRECT? WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU NEED IMPROVEMENT?
-
For me, musically, I like the melodic
side of things and I would like to concentrate on catchy, memorable melodies
driven along by energetic heavy guitar work. As musicians, there
is room for improvement for all of us but I don't have a area as such that
I wan't the band to improve on. Were still relatively new to the
scene and time is a good teacher.
12.NAME SOME OF YOUR MOST BELOVED
BANDS AND ALBUMS.
-
Iron Maiden - all of there albums
-
Judas Priest - Ram it Down, Painkiller
-
Primal Fear - Primal Fear, Nuclear
Fire
-
Nightwish - Wishmaster
-
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
-
Van Halen - Best Of volume 1
13.IT'S A FACT THAT METAL BANDS
SPEND MORE MONEY TO CREATE THEIR ALBUMS - DEMOS OR TO ADVERTISE THEM THAN
THEY EARN FROM WHAT THEY DO. WHICH IS AFTER ALL THE TRUE REWARD OF THE
METAL ARTIST?
-
Playing live and knowing that there
are people out there who get into our music.
14.LABELS FORSE THE ARTISTS
TO RELEASE AN ALBUM EVERY YEAR. DON'T YOU THINK THAT THIS MAKES THE ARTISTS
CREATE "FAST" AND IMPROVISED ALBUMS, WITHOUT INSPIRATION AND AT THE SAME
TIME THEY DON'T GIVE THE "SPACE" TO THE FANS TO CAREFULLY LISTEN TO AN
ALBUM, CAUSE THEY ARE "OBLIGED" INA WAY TO BUY THE NEXT ONE? WHICH
ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT?
-
I don't need time to listen to an album.
If it is good I will listen to it for about 2 weeks all the time and now
and again when I feel like it after that. I don't like the idea of
being forced to write an album but at the end of the day: a record company
is there to make money, not for the love of the music, so you are under
contract to make them money and make albums.
15.IF SOMEDAY YOU HAD THE CHANCE
TO MEET THE CREATURE THAT CREATED THE UNIVERSE, WHICH WOULD YOUR BIGGEST
QUESTION BE?
-
Is it possible for me to travel back
in time, 'cause I sorta want to see the Titanic sink.
16.IF TIME TRAVEL WAS POSSIBLE,
WHICH HISTORICAL PERIOD WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT AND WHY? WHAT WOULD YOU
MISS THE MOST FROM OUR TIME?
-
Ha Ha, check out my last answer. I'm
not reading ahead either! I would like to live in LA during the 80's.
I would miss the computer/digital technology we have now.
17.WHICH IS MAN'S BIGGEST TEMPTATION?
-
I'm not... sure but probably sex.
18.WHAT PROLOGUE AND TITLE WOULD
YOU LIKE THIS INTERVIEW TO HAVE?
19.THANK YOU!HAVE I FORGOT TO
ASK YOU ANYTHING AND YOU'D LIKE TO MENTION?
-
Thank you to people like you that go
out of their way to support independant metal acts around the world.
And the fans that have bought a CD.
