SEPSISM
-
WHEN A GOOD
DEATH/GRIND METAL RELEASE FALLS INTO OUR HANDS, THEN WE CAN'T RESIST TO
INTERVIEW THE BAND THAT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT. SO HERE IS AN INTERVIEW
WITH SEPSISM...
1. FIRST OF ALL POINT OUT THE MOST
IMPORTANT MOMENTS OF THE BAND'S HISTORY AND INTRODUCE THE BAND TO THE READERS.
-
Well, Fernando (vocals) and Phillip
(drums) are the original members, I joined in 1993 (Leon guitarist) SEPSISM
had a demo out already and we recorded our second one just after I joined,
in 1994 we released SEVERE CARNAL BUTCHERY, and that is when the band started
to get some real recognition. 1998 we put out PURULENT DECOMPOSITION on
Repulse Records. Raffi, our current bass player
joined in 2001. January of 2003 we recorded TO PREVAIL IN DISGUST and here
we are.
2.HOW DID YOU SELECT THIS BAND NAME?
WHAT CRITERIA DID YOU HAVE? IT'S AGREEK WORD AS YOU MUST ALREADY KNOW.
HOW IMPORTANT DO YOU THINK IS THE CORRECT CHOICE OF A MONIKER?
-
The band was named when I joined, so
I had no part in the selection of the moniker, but I have always thought
it was a great DEATHMETAL band name, not cheesy at all, it's a very original
name.
3. TELL US A FEW THINGS REGARDING "TO
PREVAIL IN DISGUST" AND POINT OUT THE MAIN SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES
WITH YOUR PREVIOUS RELEASES. ARE YOU STILL SATISFIED WITH IT?
-
Personally i think that TO PREVAIL
IN DISGUST is the best material that we have written to date, compared
to PURULENT DECOMPOSITION, it more accurately shows where we are now as
a band, what people may not realize is that when we released PURULENT DECOMPOSITION,
most of the material on that album was just re-recorded versions of songs
from our first two demos, so much of the material was older then SEVERE
CARNAL BUTCHERY, our third demo. The album really did not represent where
we were at the that time as far as song writing goes. TO
PREVAIL IN DISGUST shows what we are capable of now, and how much we have
grown and we are very satisfied with the material on it and I am sure any
fan of SEPSISM will be too.
4.WHAT ARE YOUR LYRICS TALKING ABOUT?
ARE THE LYRICS OF GORE THEMATOLOGY ? WHAT DO YOU FIND SO INTERESTING IN
IT?
-
We touch on a variety of subjects on
this album, mostly reality based shit, Just as our music has matured so
have our lyrics, so although we keep in the tradition DEATHMETAL themes
such as death, murder, and violence, we try to keep things interesting
and the subject matter relevant, our songs are more like short stories
then just pointless blabbering about gore and killing. i think on this
album we have definitely taken a more aggressive turn, the material and
the lyrics are very aggressive
and we like it that way.
5. WHAT DOES THE COVER ARTWORK REPRESENT
AND WHICH IS ITS CONNECTION WITH THE LYRICS AND THE ALBUM'S TITLE?
-
With the cover art this time around
we really wanted to do something more dark and interesting then the typical
dead body blood and guts cover. As far as it's connection with the album
tittle I think that everyone can draw their own conclusion about that.
6. DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR TOURING
OR ATTENDING METAL FESTIVALS IN THE SUMMER? COULD YOU DESCRIBE A TYPICAL
SEPSISM LIVE SHOW?
-
We have plans to play as much as we
possible can, basically we love to play live and when we play we give 110%
no fake bullshit, no choreographed stage show, we just really feel the
music that we play and I think that translates into a lot of energy and
the audience can feel it and they respond. Our shows are typically full
of lots of aggressions and energy.
7.LET ME PLAY DEVIL'S ADVOCATE...YOU
PLAY DEATH/GRIND WHICH IS A GENRE REQUIRING NOT SO MANY TECHNICAL SKILLS
BUT SPEED AND BLASTBEATS ARE ITS MAIN TARGET. SO, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO
SOMEONE THAT MIGHT SAY "OK!
GRIND METAL BANDS ARE ALL THE SAME". WHAT NEW DO YOU HAVE TO OFFER AND
WHAT WOULD YOU ANSWER TO SUCH A COMMENT?
-
Basically anyone who makes a comment
like that is just ignorant, and anyone who thinks that this type of music
does not take skill, obviously does not even play an instrument. There
are a lot of DEATHMETAL/GRIND bands out there and at the end of the day
I think it just boils down to how creative you are with the music and whether
you have your owe style rather then just cloning exactly what other
bands have done. As far as what SEPSISM has to offer that's new, I think
our style, creativity and conviction is our strength. We are very picky
with writing our songs and always try to do things differently wile keeping
it catchy and memorable, I think a lot of bands have become more concerned
with being "the most brutal" or the most "technical" and in the process
have forsaken the basics of writing a good song, a song that will stick
in peoples heads. We concentrate on each of our songs making it the best
we possibly can, and making sure that it has it's own unique style and
does not sound like just a continuation of the song before it.
8. WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN COMPOSING MUSIC?
DO YOUR FEELINGS AND THOUGHTS ATE VERY GIVEN TIME DIRECT YOU TOWARDS HOW
YOU WANT YOUR SONGS TO SOUND? AFTER ALL MUSIC IS EMOTION ABOVE ALL, ISN'T
IT? SO, WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY ABOUT ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO THINK OF MUSIC
AS AN INDUSTRY AND PRODUCT, AN EASY WAY OF EARNING MONEY?
-
Basically i am inspired by any number
of things, most of the time i will just get ideas for riffs or the beginnings
of songs, and i will work off of that to create a song or the basics of
it, and then we will work on it as a band arranging it and getting it all
together. most of the time when i write i think about making something
aggressive that will get a reaction out of people, riffs that would make
me want to slam and get crazy if I was in the audence listening because
music is very much about emotion. For me music is personal. The music that
SEPSISM makes is part of all of us, sure on the industry end of it, its
a product meant to be sold, but that is just part of the whole music biz,
and I don't think it is an easy way to make money because we
haven't made shit!
9. THERE IS SOMETHING CONTRADICTORY
IN THE U.S. ON ONE HAND YOU HAVE EXTREMELY PROMISING AND GOOD BANDS AND
ON THE OTHER HAND IT SEEMS AS THE FANS OVER THERE HAVE LACK OF METAL EDUCATION,
THUS THEY FOLLOW EVERY TREND. WHY DO YOU THINK THIS HAPPENS? HOW DIFFICULT
ARE THINGS FOR A METAL MUSICIAN IN THE U.S.?
-
Well I think that most kids growing
up in the U.S. are exposed to massive amounts of pop culture from radio
and MTV, basically having the trends of the day shoved down their throats
constantly, and even if some kids eventually get into metal and DEATHMETAL,
i think that most don't really bother to learn the roots of metal, and
most don't know anything about zines and tape trading and shit like that.
but the more people that get into metal the better, i mean I have met kids
who love Nile and Cryptopsy and have no idea who Pestilence
or Carcass are, that fucking sucks but at the same time they are at the
shows showing their support just as much or more so then the hardcore old
fans.
10. IF YOUR MUSIC WERE AN EMOTION,
WHAT WOULD IT BE? IF IT WERE A PAINTING, WHAT WOULD IT SHOW?
-
I don't think one emotion would describe
all of our music, it can vary from excitement to aggression to hate and
disgust to pure fucking rage, if it was a painting i think it would just
be a big fist heading right towards you face !...hahahaa
11. IF YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO MEET THE
CREATURE THAT CREATED THE UNIVERSE, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ASK HIM?
-
What the point of existence is, of
course
12. WHICH IS MAN'S BIGGEST TEMPTATION?
13. WHICH IS THE SILLIEST THING YOU
DID IN ORDER TO WIN A WOMAN'S ATTENTION?
-
HAHAHA to be honest i really can't
think of anything silly that i have done
14. IF YOU COULD TRAVEL BACK IN TIME,
WHICH HISTORICAL PERIOD WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT AND WHAT WOULD YOU MISS
THE MOST FROM OUR TIMES?
-
What a gay question hahahaha, who knows,
I really don't give a fuck about the past, and most written history is
full of lies. So I think I would much rather travel into the future.
15. WHICH IS THE STRANGEST/FUNNIEST
QUESTION SOMEONE'S EVER ASKED YOU?
-
I had someone asked me how many times
a day I shit in an interview, ahhah that was pretty strange.
16. WHAT TITLE WOULD YOU LIKE THIS
INTERVIEW TO HAVE?
17. THANK YOU! HAVE I FORGOTTEN TO
ASK YOU ANYTHING AND YOU'D LIKE TO MENTION?
-
Thanks for the interview and check
