SERIAL BUTCHER

SERIAL BUTCHER IS A BAND FROM BELGIUM. THEIR STYLE IS DEATH METAL MOSTLY INFLUENCED BY THE U,S. DEATH METAL SCHOOL. RECENTLY HAVE RELEASED THEIR SECOND SELF-FINANCED MINI CD (INCLUDES 6 TRACKS) AND CAUSE OF THAT BEHIND THE VEIL GRAB THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRESENT YOU THIS VERY PROMISSING BAND. READ THE INTERVIEW THAT NICOLAS THEIR GUITARIST GAVE TO US...

1.FIRST OF ALL GIVE US A SHORT BAND BIO AND PRESENT THE BAND.
Serial Butcher was started in 1995 by Nico (drums) and Hendrik (guitar). Steven joined later on vocals together with Bob on bass and they released two demo tapes before recording their debut cd "Exhumed Rotting" in 1998. The response was great and they played shows all over the Benelux. In 2000 Steven left for personal reasons, followed by Bob a little later so they split up. The next year Nico bought a drum computer and started writing songs again. Soon they were rejoined by Steven and started performing again with both Nico and Hendrik on guitars. The drum computer experiment didn't work out however so they got Nicolas on guitar so Nico could return to the drumset. In 2002 they recorded 6 songs at CCR studio which is currently getting rave reviews from all over the world.
2.WHY HAVE YOU NAMED THE BAND SERIAL BUTCHER? HOW GAVE THIS NAME TO THE BAND?
The name was chosen before I joined the band so I'm afraid I can't help you with that. I think it pretty much speaks for itself though.
3.HOW MANY RELEASES DO YOU HAVE (DEMO AND CDS)? TELL US A FEW THINGS ABOUT EACH ONE OF THEM. IN WHICH FIELDS HAVE YOU PROGRESSED?
We recorded 1 cd before this one in 1998 called "exhumed rotting". We definitely progressed a lot in the songwriting department I would say. The newer songs are catchier, have more melody yet are extremely brutal at the same time.
4.YOU RELEASED YOUR NEW CD. GIVE US SOME INFO ABOUT IT. WHEN WAS IT RECORDED, HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU, WHERE WAS IT RECORDED AND WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PRODUCTION? ARE YOU STILL SATISFIED WITH IT OR IS THERE ANYTHING YOU'D LIEK TO CHANGE?
We recorded it in April 2002 in just 3 days at CCR studios. Thanks to the producer (kris) we managed to finish recording and mixing 6 songs in such a short timespan. If we had more time we would've of course spent more time tuning and twisting the knobs but like I said, we did it all in 3 days. I'm very happy with the result.
5.TELL ME ABOUT YOUR LYRICS. WHAT ATTRACTS YOU IN WRITING GORE LYRICS? WHAT DO YOU FIND APPEALING IN IT?
It's just a humour factor, the lyrics are definitely gory but they're not supposed to be taken seriously. I think you can figure that one out yourself pretty easily just by reading the song titles. We all love silly horror movies (who doesn't) so that's where we draw our influences. that and nico's sick and disturbed childhood.
6.WILL YOUR CD BE RELEASED FROM ANY LABEL OR WILL IT BE SELF FINANCED AND SELF DISTRIBUTED? HAVE YOU SENT IT TO ANY LABELS TILL NOW?
After sending promo pakcs to about 800 labels the past few months we finally got offered a deal from a label which I cannot name yet. Once it's official it will be announced on our website so keep an eye open for that.
7.WHY DO YOU THINK THERE ARE MANY GUYS PLAYING EXTREME METAL WHO HAVE A VERY SERIOUS AND SEVERE APPEARANCE AND ATTITUDE? THEY SEEM TO TAKE EVERYTHING TO SERIOUSLY AND THE SAY THAT THERE IS NO SPACE FOR FUN IN HEAVY METAL AND EXTREME METAL MUSIC IN SPECIFIC. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
I think they're idiots. One should approach metal seriously as a musician but not as a person. Obviously the whole metal attitude is very much tongue-in-cheek. If you're too dumb to get that, that's pretty sad. It's the same with hiphop, only retards take that shit seriously. I love playing and listening to deathmetal but you'll never see me wearing spikes and not taking a shower for 2 weeks.
8.YOU HAVE PERFORMED LIVE IN THE PAST. CAN YOU REMEMBER YOUR FEELING DURING YOUR FIRST LIVE APPEARANCE? DO YOU REMEMBER ANY FUNNY INCIDENTS?
Apart from forgetting riffs and breaking strings not much no. Oh a part of the crowd started chanting my name during my first gig, that was pretty funny. I myself got used to it pretty quickly and love performing now. Personally I can't stand bands that just stand there looking at each other. If you're not gonna perform I'll just stay at home and listen to the fucking cd.
9.HOW ARE YOU PLANNING TO PROMOTE YOUR NEW WORK? DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS MADE THIS FAR, ANY SHOWS BOOKED?
We have plenty of shows planned, in Belgium as well as the rest of Europe. I'm sending out shitloads of cd's to zines and radioshows so we're hoping that will pay off in the long run. So far we've only gotten positive reviews so that's good.
10.WHICH IS THE BIGGEST DREAM YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE WITH YOUR MUSIC?
Be respected as a deathmetal musician, release better cd's and maybe tour a little. I just wanna keep producing music that I can be proud of myself. I don't see the point in continueing when that's not the case anymore.
11.WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO A FAN TO CONVINCE HIM LISTEN TO YOUR ALBUM? WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR MUSIC THAT CAN ATTRACT THE METALLERS?
It's got everything: raging blastbeats, thrashy riffs, catchy melodies, chilling solo's and grunts you will feel down in your stomache. Seriously, just listen to the samples on our website and you'll get an idea of what the album sounds like.
12.IF YOU DIDN'T PLAY DEATH METAL, WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY WITHIN THE METAL GENRE OF COURSE ALWAYS?
Besides deathmetal I don't listen to many other styles. I like some of the newer crossover styles like candiria, mastodon etc. usually I listen to older bands: death, suffocation, slayer, etc. I enjoy the musicianship of some of those prog/heavy bands but they're so fucking cheesy most of the time. I want a band to kick my ass on stage. If I want to relax I'll go to a jazz gig.
13.IF YOU HAD THE ABILITY TO CHANGE SOMETHING IN THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?
    Ban religion.
14.IF YOU WERE TRANSFERED IN THE PAST, WHAT WOULD YOU MISS THE MOST FROM OUR TIMES AND WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU WOULDN'T MISS AT ALL?
I'd miss metal of course! What I definitely wouldn't miss is the closeminded materialistic attitude people have nowadays, it makes me fucking sick. Then again, people have been retards for thousands of years so I don't think I'd feel much better in a different era. Just try to make the best of what you got and don't live in the past.
15.WHAT TITLE WOULD YOU LIKE THIS INTERVIEW TO HAVE?
    Interview with a metal god.
16.THANK YOU! LEAVE YOUR MESSAGE...
