SICKENING
HORROR
Lately, Greece has started
building a strong and powerful underground scene. Worthy representators
of this massive movement are Sickening Horror, who recorded an incredible
demo. For this and many more we had a talk with all the band members. Check
them out!
1.SICKENING HORROR EXIST AS A BAND
SINCE 2002. SO, GIVE US A BAND BIO IN A FEW WORDS.
The band was created in the beginning
of 2002 from George Antipati: guitars/vocals, Ilia Dara: bass and George
Kollia: drums. After a little while we started playing live in Athens and
around Greece and we completed some of our compositions. In 2003 a 4th
member was added in our line up, George Mpokos on the guitars, but he left
a while ago because he had too many obligations. We are under negotiations
with a label for the release of a full length album.
2.WHICH ARE THE BAND'S BIGGEST INFLUENCES?
Each one of us listens to different
things, but we have some common influences and bands that we love like
CANNIBAL CORPSE, MORBID ANGEL, DEATH, ATHEIST, CYNIC etc.
3.WHO WRITES THE SONGS MAINLY? DO YOU
HAVE A "LEADER" IN THAT FIELD?
We are all responsible for the
compositions and each one offers his inspiration either by giving a riff,
or a rhythm or various ideas... All the lyrics are written by Georhe Antipatis.
4.YOU BELONG TO THIS CATEGORY OF BANDS
THAT MANAGE TO ACHIEVE MANY THINGS IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME AND THIS IS
PROVEN FROM THE FACT THAT YOU SUPPORTED HUGE BANDS OF THIS GENRE LIKE NILE,
MISERY INDEX , SEPTIC FLESH. I THINK THIS IS BASED ON THE FACT THAT YOU
HAVE ORGANIZED THE BAND VERY WELL. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY ON THIS? WHAT
DO YOU HAVE TO SUGGEST TO THE BANDS THAT NOW START? SHARE WITH US YOUR
EXPERIENCES FROM THOSE LIVE SHOWS?
First of all, we have a long road
ahead of us still, but for the bands that now start off, what we think
is very important are the intensive and often rehearsals and as many live
performances as possible, since they are the most important chance for
the band to be heard. One more thing is that they shouldn't rush to record
a demo, unless they believe their ideas are good enough.
5.AS I OBSERVED IN THE BOOKLET, THE
DRUMS HAVE BEEN RECORDED IN FRAGILE STUDIOS AND THE REST OF THE INSTRUMENTS
HAVE BEEN RECORDED IN ZERO GRAVITY. WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?
We recorded in Zero Gravity studios
because we have a very good relationship with the producer Thano Aggeli,
who has a vast knowledge in the death metal sound. However, we couldn't
record the drums in Zero Gravity, so we went to Fragile Studios.
6.I THINK THAT THE PRESENCE OF GEORGE
KOLLIAS BEHIND THE DRUMS IS VERY IMPORTANT, WHO IS ALSO DRUMMER OF THE
HUGE NIGHTFALL. DO YOU THINK THIS HELPS THE BAND AND IF YES, IN WHICH WAYS?
I SHOULD ALSO MENTION THAT GEORGE DREW THIS INCREDIBLE LOGO YOU HAVE!
Surely his experience with Nightfall
has helped us especially when it comes to the organizing of the band. Besides
this, perhaps he is the only drummer in Greece that can fully follow the
sound of the band.
7.GEORGE HOW HAVE YOU DECIDED TO PLAY
WITH SICKENING HORROR, SINCE YOU ARE A PERMANENT MEMBER OF NIGHTFALL. NIGHTFALL
MUST TAKE UP A LOT OF YOUR TIME. IS THERE SOMETHING THAT NIGHTFALL CAN'T
GIVE YOU AND YOU GET IT THROUGH SICKENING HORROR?
Surely my free time is restricted
having these 2 bands and this is because of the fact that both in Sickenig
Horror and Nightfall, I try to work on professional standards, giving the
best of me. There is nothing that one band can give me and the other one
can't. The only reason I am in 2 bands is my enormous love for music and
need for work.
8.I THINK THAT THE MOST SERIOUS PROBLEM
OF MOST OF THE BANDS THAT RECORD A DEMO OR A PROMO, ARE THE VOCALS. HOWEVER,
I THINK YOU SOLVED THE PROBLEM WITH THE STRAIGHT FROM HELL THROAT OF GEORGE
ANTIPATI.
Indeed! Most of the bands have
a problem with the vocals and especially in the accent. George has personality
and his own style. He has a specific idea on how the vocals should be.
He works very hard on matters of correct timing, pronounciation, accent
and expressiveness.
9.DURING YOUR LIVE SHOWS YOU COVER
SONGS OF SOME OF THE GREATEST METAL BANDS AND YOU PLAY THEM FLAWLESS. ON
STAGE YOU ARE LIKE UNCHAINED ANIMALS. THIS PROVES TO ME THAT YOU HAVE CONNECTED
THE ON STAGE APPEARANCE WITH THE MUSIC. HOW IMPORTANT IS THIS CONNECTION
FOR YOU AND FOR ALL THE METAL BANDS IN GENERAL?
Live shows is the most important
thing we enjoy in music. Honestly, we live for this! During the live shows
we are given the chance to release all the energy that lies within us and
this results into a merciless headbanging and maximum adrenaline. It's
a sad thing watching a band standing still, especially if they belong to
the extreme sound.
10. GEORGE KOLLIA IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE
BETWEEN SICKENING HORROR AND NIGHTFALL, WHICH ONE WOULD
YOU SELECT AND WHY?
I'd choose curtain 3..(hahaha.
Seriously now there is no chance of such an issue to occur as long as I
do what I have to do properly and I don't neglect my obligations. I love
Nightfall since I was a child, when they released back then their first
album. I was 14 years old at the time and I had been playing the drums
for 2 years! Besides since 1995 our relationship was extremely friendly
and in the beginning of 2001 I joined the band. You can understand that
we have a strong chemistry between us and a very friendly environment.
Better than ever!! On the other hand, Sickening Horror is like my second
family. We also have a good chemistry and everything that compises the
idea of a "family". They are the best musicians I could ever imagine to
work with and they help me evolve both as a musician and as a person. Like
I said the word family represents us absolutely! I am very happy I have
the chance to play with both bands and I'd do anything for them...
