SINOCENCE
I really don't want to
write much this time on the prologue, because I don't want to tire you
and it is much better to read the interesting answers of this band, than
my thoughts about them (you can read my thoughts on the demo section of
this site). Simply I want to state that SINOCENCE with their new demo blew
my head off...
1.HELLO! MY CONGRATULATIONS FOR
YOUR INCREDIBLE NEW WORK! WHICH ARE YOUR FEELING AND THOUGHTS ABOUT "ACCEPTABLE
LEVEL OF VIOLENCE" NOW THAT YOU HAVE RELEASED IT?
-
(Moro) I’m quite pleased with the result.
We have changed studios and you can hear why. Recorded in four days,
I think the songs came out well. This time I wanted to move away from the
frills and concept voice-overs of the last demo and show that we could
release a cd that allowed the music to do the talking. Although I will
note that this latest cd is only 1 in a series of three to be released
this year. I would kind of like all three to be looked upon as one large
album.
-
(Kaxxx) I’m actually very relieved
that it's released. When we recorded ‘SATAN’ I was relatively new
to the band and the recording process. I feel that in retrospect
we never really got the proper feel for that E.P. but 'VIOLENCE' is definitely
a truer representation of the band.
2.I THINK THAT THE BAND HAS CHANGED
A LOT FROM YOUR
PREVIOUS DEMO. FIRST OF ALL, YOUR
MUSIC BECAME MORE
AGGRESSIVE AND STRAIGHT FORWARD.
THE PRODUCTION IS
VERY PROFESSIONAL. WHAT OCCURED
TO YOU IN A PERSONAL AND MUSICAL LEVEL THAT CAUSED THIS CHANGE?
-
(Moro) To be honest I think we
all found ourselves struggling with personal issues during the writing
of "violence" so it became more than just writing a heavy metal e.p, more
like something to vent our frustrations. To a degree I think all
our lives changed , through difficult times, but it brought us closer as
a unit and for the first time instead of someone coming into the studio
with a song finished we had begun to write songs as a team. We also
introduced our new drummer Dave to the band as we felt his style of drumming
was perfect for were we wanted to go with "violence".
-
(Kaxxx) Davy, our new drummer (and
my brother) brought a great deal of power to the band that was definitely
lacking before. Dave is a drummers drummer and has great knowledge
of what fits and what feels right for a song. We can play and write
the type of music we really want to now.
3.I DON'T KNOW, IF SOME OTHERS HAVE
TOLD YOU, BUT THE
DEMO CARRIES INFLUENCES FROM THE
BAY AREA THRASH METAL SCENE. DO YOU AGREE? WHICH BANDS DO YOU LIKE FROM
THIS SCENE?
-
(Moro) Critics are beginning
to say this. Not really an intention on our part. I still listen
to more or less the same kind of thing I listened to during "Satan".
For me the music I write is an expression of myself although I cant deny
outside influences. I think this is the direction I've always wanted
to step towards but just didn't have the right musicians by my side to
do so. I am confident that after three or so years of line up changes-
Sinocence has finally settled with this unit. "Violence" is the beginning
of what I like to consider Sinocence and we've only started. I like
Machinehead and slipknot and the likes of.
-
(Kaxxx) We have been getting compared
to Bay Area Bands as of late, particularly Anthrax, Metallica, and Machinehead.
I take this as a huge compliment. I mean, Jesus, these are bands
we look up to and who someday, hopefully we will have the privilege to
share the stage with. I think this comparison proves that hopefully
we are on the right road, but I do think we are original in our own right.
4.MORO'S VOCALS ARE A MIX OF JAMES
HETFIELD AND
NICKELBACK'S SINGER. DON'T YOU
THINK THAT THIS MIXTURE MIGHT NOT PLEASE SOME OF THE MORE CLASSIC METAL
FANS?
-
(Kaxxx) He gets compared to everyone.
The last one I heard was Eddie Vedor. I can gear Hetfield and mustaine
in him (I guess he does have a little bit of Chad Kroegar come to think
of it). It's hard to say if classic metal fans will dig his style
but he definitely improved on this E.P. we were extremely happy with how
his vocals turned out.
-
(Moro) Thank-you, I quite like that
comparison. Im not the greatest Nickelback fan in the world but I
know he can sing. I have always questioned my ability as vocalist
but I had a lot of fun recording this one and a great producer. I
like lower sounding vocalists who get straight to the point and sing with
emphasis and sound like they mean what their saying instead of all this
high forced 'look at what I can do with my voice' bullshit. So far
classic metal fans seem to really like it, I think they would prefer it
the way it sounds now to having some high-pitched guy in tight leather
trousers squeaking over the riffs. WE are very down to earth guys
and we like to think we tell it how it is.
5.THE TITLE OF THE DEMO IS "ACCEPTABLE
LEVEL OF
VIOLENCE". I CONSIDER IT AS AN
IRONY FOR THE HYPOCRISY
OF THE MODERN SOCIETY. AM I RIGHT?
-
(Moro) Cool, you seem to get it.
Yeah, to a point. It's based on a picture I once saw a number of
years ago during a high point in the troubles in Northern Ireland. It showed
a man Sitting in a comfortable chair in a bathrobe sipping a glass of wine
beside a television that was off and wearing a pair of sunglasses.
Behind him were two windows through which Belfast city was burning.
Think about it!
-
(kaxxx) Well it either 'Acceptable
level of Violence' or 'Thank God for Kaxxx', just kidding!
6.MANY BANDS THAT PLAY MODERN HEAVY
METAL DON'T SPEAK ABOUT POLITICS AND PROBLEMS THAT HUMANS FACE NOWADAYS.
PERHOAS THEY ARE AFRAID THEY MIGHT LOSE THEIR FAN BASE. ON THE CONTRARY
SINOCENCE'S LYRICS ARE INSPIRED BY THOSE THEMES. DO YOU THINK THAT IT'S
IMPORTANT FOR THE ARTISTS TO SPEAK MORE FREELY AND EXPRESS THEIR DEEPERS
THOUGHTS?
-
(Moro) I guess people view music
on different levels. Not all fans want to hear songs on a personal
level. Take Iron Maiden for example. They’re lyrics are cool and
tell educated tales of legend and in some cases history. For me its
a release and it helps me to perform the songs with more intent.
Saying this, not all of ou material is based on events in our lives. THERE'S
normally at least one song that tells a story of something that happened
else were in the world that has had enough impact on us to be deserving
of a song.
-
(Kaxxx) I think it's important that
artists should write about issues that are worth writing about, instead
of regurgitating the same old shit. Moro writes the majority of our
lyrics and comes up with some pretty weird subjects for songs but these
are the things that make good songs for us.
7.DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS FOR LIVE SHOWS?
CAN YOU
DESCRIBE A SINOCENCE LIVE SHOW?
-
(Moro) live shows in N. Ireland are
not as frequent as they were because we have set our sites out side of
the country and do tend to play in and around England a lot. We have
plans to go as far a field as Belgium and Boston. Basically if it's
out of the country, we will play it. A Sinocence live show normally consists
of deafening volume, lots of hair, sweat, occasionally blood, (trying not
be knocked into the crowd by Kaxxx...(very scary) and a lot of bad words.
Oh yes and one hell of an after show party.
-
(Kaxxx) We'd love to play all over
the place. and as often as we could but it costs a lot. Anytime
we do a gig we always get a good response because I think our songs translate
to the stage very well. To describe our shows I'd have to say - powerful,
loud and good fucking craic.
8.WHICH IS ACCORDING TO YOU THE BEST
AND WHICH THE
WORST ELEMENT AS A BAND? WHICH
IS YOUR TRADEMARK?
-
(Moro) The worst element of the band
is undoubtedly our financial situation. We have big ideas, but it
costs us so much to put into action. This doesn't stop us it just
means it takes a bit longer to get things done. this element of the
band is nearly as bad as the huge hangovers we are forced to deal with
quite regularly. As far as trademarks go I’m not sure...I cant speak
for anyone else but I like to think of ourselves as very real people...ripped
jeans long hair, Street kind of image..... SIN666 kind of became
our trademark during 'Satan' (not the intro) but the actual words, kind
of like a chant for the audience. The best element of the band is in my
opinion the strength of the songs and the ideas shared to create each e.p.
Like any other band we get on well but have our little disagreements.
Normally we will just all get pissed and make up...works every time, even
if it means me saying I’m wrong, which I’m not!!...But anything for an
easy life.
-
(kaxxx) Our best element? If
not our songs it would have to be the attitude of the band. Not be
clichéd but we do have that 'never say die' attitude. Coming
out of N. Ireland it's very hard to make an impact but we work and fight
hard for everything we get. You got to want it. Moro's definitely
got our worst element nailed on the head above. As for our trademark, either
SIN666 or the line from the song thorn from Sinocence first release 'embracing
decadence' - 'We swear never to conform'
9.ARE YOU SATISFIED BY THE FEEDBACK
YOU GOT THIS FAR?
DO YOU HAVE ANY PROPOSALS FROM
LABELS?
-
(Moro) Yes, we are much happier with
the response this time. We are preparing to send some promos to record
companies now. This will be the first time we have done this.
We just wanted to get everything in order to do so, such as the website
update etc.
-
(Kaxxx) We're getting a great response
to this cd like I mentioned before. WE didn't quite get it right
on ‘Satan’ but we did this time. It's cool to read or hear that people
like what we are doing; it makes it all worthwhile.
10.WHICH WORDS DO YOU THINK COULD BEST
DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC?
-
(Moro) Evocative, aggressive,
-
(Kaxxx) Original, Raw and Red
11.WHICH IMPORTANT PERSONALITY (DEAD
OR ALIVE) WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET AND WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ASK HIM?
-
(Kaxxx) That’s a pretty good question.
Metal fans aren’t going to like this answer but sorry Y'all, I like what
I like. It would be Prince. He's a cool muthafucker.
My question to him would be: Do you have to be that good on stage? The
guy is too damn good! If I had to choose dead people it would be Jim Morrison
or Bruce Lee.
-
(Moro) (Appears a little distraught)
12.DO YOU AGREE WITH THE BELIEF THAT
AN ARTIST SHOULD BE WITNESSING PAIN IN ORDER TO CREATE A MASTERPIECE? DOES
THIS HAPPEN WITH YOU AS WELL?
-
(Moro) I do believe this, strongly.
To write a song about something you have not experienced first hand for
me means I am merely speculating, although not a bad thing I don't believe
you can properly capture the emotion in the music that would portray the
songs topic as well; taking into consideration that the song deals with
something on a personal level. To tell you the truth, in some cases songs
are the only good thing I've got out of certain situations. The follow-up
cd that is coming along very nicely, shows that witnessing pain has occurred
within the four walls of Sinocence, and with the drive to try something
different every time we make an e.p. It becomes very apparent this time
round, packing a heavy punch with a few subtle surprises.
