Snowthorn
To be sincere, I didn't
expect to receive this interview. Many months have passed since I sent
it to Nikos, but yesterday I received an email and I am really glad that
now everyone can read it, cause it worths your time. I 'd like to clear
something out, we did this interview for the first demo and now SNOWTHORN
have released their second one...
1.HELLO! WHEN HAVE YOU DECIDED TO FORM SNOWTHORN?
IS "NIGHT OF THE DREAMWEAVER" YOUR FIRST DEMO? DID YOU HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE
IN PREVIOUS BANDS BEFORE FORMING YOUR OWN?

It was in 1996 whe I decided that I wanted to
do something different from the two bands I was already in. These were
PARANOEA ( punk) and CRYSTALIZE (THRASH METAL). The “Night of the Dreamweaver”
is my first demo, although before this I had made two promos of one track
each, ‘DROWNING UNDER THE UNFINISHED DREAM” and “THE DREAMS COMPLETE” .
A version of these is included in my second demo which I have just finished,
with the title ‘CATATONIC TRANCES”.
2.SNOWTHORN IS AN ONE MAN'S BAND? WHAT MADE YOU
DO THAT AND NOT TRY TO FORM A FULL MEMBER GROUP? DO YOU BELIEVE THAT IF
YOU COOPERATE WITH OTHER PEOPLE THE RESULT WONT' BE YOURS ANY MORE? DO
YOU THINK THAT IT WILL STOP FULLY REFLECTING YOUR EMOTIONS?

I want SNOWTHORN to be purely mine. I have two
other bands, THE DOTS ( alternative punk-rock) and STUDIO WASTE (nu metal)
and I have been really busy with gigs and rehearsals. Working with others
is business, working on my own is pleasure.
3.A QUESTION RELEVANT TO THE PREVIOUS IS: DO YOU
PLAN TO DO LIVE SHOWS IF YOU HAVE A PROPOSAL? IF YES, WHAT WOULD YOU DO
IN SUCH A CASE? WOULD YOU USE SESIONISTS OR WOULD YOU SEARCH FOR A STABLE
LINE UP?

I have no intension of doing live – shows of
SNOWTHORN or turning SNOWTHORN into a full member band.
4.ONE THING THAT MAKES YOUR MUSIC DISTINGUISH
FROM THE REST OF THE BANDS IS THAT YOU COMBINE THE OLD NORWEGIAN BLACK
METAL WITH MELODIES. HOW DID YOU DO THAT? HOW IMPORTANT ARE MELODIES TO
YOU?

Einstein used to say that melodies are not the
creation of a man. They float in space and the composer may manage to get
hold of some and use them. He does not do it on purpose, it just happens.
5.WHICH BANDS AND ARTISTS DO YOU CONSIDER THAT
HELPED YOU OR INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST TO CREATE YOUR SOUND IN SNOWTHORN?

The bands that influenced me are SATYRICON, DARKTHRONE,
ENSLAVED.
6.SOMETHING ELSE I NOTICED AND SURPRISED ME IS
THAT THE LYRICS HAVE A POETIC MOOD. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO WRITE
LYRICS AND WHAT KIND OF THINGS INTRIGUE YOU TO TALK ABOUT? PLEASE TELL
ME A FEW THINGS ABOUT EACH SONG INCLUDED IN YOUR DEMO.

My lyrics come from my notebook. And my notebook
is full of moments which I have lived, others which I long to live or I
would never want to live. My lyrics may seem to be a far cry from reality
but in fact they are a cry for reality.
7.SNOWTHORN WERE CREATED JUST TO SATISFY YOUR
ARTISTIC NEEDS OR DO YOU PLAN TO SEND A DEMO TO LABELS AS WELL? WITH WHAT
CRITERIA WILL YOU SELECT A RECORD
LABEL?

8.IF YOUR MUSIC WERE AN EMOTION, WHAT WOULD IT
BE? IF IT WERE A PAINTING, WHAT WOULD IT SHOW?

The emotion would be a deep sorrow for the beauty
of failure. It is not possible to fully describe a form of art using another
form of art. Trying to picture music is like trying to dance to a painting.
9.WHICH IS, ACCORDING TO YOU, THE BEST AND WHICH
THE WORST PART IN YOUR MUSIC? WHICH DO YOU THINK IS YOUR TRADEMARK?

The best part, as I see it, is my melodies and
the worst is my voice. My trademark is my lyrics.
10.WHICH WORDS DO YOU THINK COULD BEST DESCRIBE
YOUR ALBUM AND YOUR MUSIC IN GENERAL?

My new demo is already out with the title “ CATATONIC
TRANCES” and I have also finished the first demo of my new one man band
