Solace
In The Shadows
Jason and Patrick of
SOLACE IN THE SHADOWS replied with a very interesting and original way
to my questionss. They use them just as a chance upon which they built
an interesting conversation between them. Read the interview and buy their
CD, cause these guys know how to rock...
1.HELLO! HOW ARE YOU? MY FIRST QUESTION FOR
YOU IS WHY DID YOU RELEASE AN EP AND NOT A FULL LENGTH ALBUM? IS IT PERHAPS
BECAUSE YOU WANTED TO SEE HOW THE PEOPLE WILL REACT TO YOUR MUSIC?
-
JC: We released an EP because we only had
four new songs after our last full length and we needed to put them out.
-
PB: I’m sure the people will react accordingly.
2.SINCE “THE SCREAMING TO SURVIVE” TOOK MY HEAD
OFF, THE SECOND QUESTION IS OBVIOUS: DO YOU HAVE MORE COMPOSITIONS APART
FROM THESE 4 AND WHEN ARE YOU THINKING TO RELEASE THEM? WILL YOU INCLUDE
ANY OF THE SONGS INCLUDED HERE IN A FUTURE FULL LENGTH ALBUM?
-
JC: We have four new songs after the EP
that we might like to record along with some others for a new full length.
Hopefully with label support.
-
PB: There better be label support.
3.OK, NOW TELL ME WHY DID YOU NAME YOUR EP “THE
SCREAMING TO SURVIVE”? WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SUGGEST? WHO OR WHAT IS SCREAMING
TO SURVIVE?
-
JC: It’s about rocking the world.
-
PB: It’s all about having the energy and
will power to rock in a world that is mostly lame dudes.
4.THE TITLE OF YOUR OPENING TRACK IS “THE FAITHFUL
UNDEAD”. I THINK IT'S A VERY CLEVER TITLE. WHICH IS THE SONG'S TOPIC? CAN
YOU TELL US THE STORY OF EACH SONG INCLUDED HERE?
-
PB: Faithful Undead is about organized religion
and the zombies it creates.
-
JC: Abysmal Paths is about being lost in
darkness while being insane.
-
PB: I thought it was about going to hell.
-
JC: Nah, that’s what every other song ever
is about.
-
PB: Oh, I guess Begone! is about forgetting
those who could not pass the test at sword’s edge.
5.THE COVER ARTWORK IS VERY GOOD AND I LIKED IT
A LOT, BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO OBSERVE IT CAREFULLY TO UNDERSTAND EVERY SINGLE
DETAIL. SO, WHAT DOES THE SCREAMING MOUTH AND THE DEMON SYMBOLIZE? WHO
IS THE CREATOR OF THE COVER ARTWORK? DID HE LISTEN TO YOUR MUSIC BEFORE
CREATING THE COVER?
-
PB: The artwork was done by Mike Hrubovcak
and Visual Darkness, http://www.visualdarkness.com.
This dude knows his shit and I urge anyone to work with him.
-
JC: The artwork basically goes along with
the title and the high intensity metal inside.
6.WON'T ASK YOU ABOUT YOUR EXTREME METAL INFLUENCES,
WHICH ARE MORE OR LESS OBVIOUS, BUT I'VE NOTICED MANY CLASSIC HEAVY METAL
AND EVEN SOME POWER METAL ELEMENTS. SO, CAN YOU TELL ME WHICH BANDS OF
CLASSIC HEAVY METAL YOU LIKE? BY THE WAY ARE RUNNING WILD AMONGST YOUR
INFLUENCES?
-
PB: Well, some of our old school influences
would be: Iron Maiden, Manowar, King Diamond, Death, etc.
-
JC: We are most certainly not influenced
by Running Wild.
7.BY THE WAY HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT OF CREATING
A CLASSIC HEAVY METAL BAND? I THINK THAT YOU'D BE ABLE TO COMPOSE INTERESTING
SONGS!
-
PB: I’ve thought of it many times but I
don’t want to do it with some vocalist that can just sing OK. We
would need to work with a very good and original vocalist and we haven’t
found someone good enough to work with yet.
-
JC: We don’t have time for bullshit.
8.YOU ALSO HAVE IN YOUR LINE UP MEMBERS FROM OTHER
BANDS AS WELL. CAN YOU TELL US WHO THEY ARE AND IF THEY WILL BE PERMANENT
BAND MEMBERS OR NOT? AREN'T YOU AFRAID THAT THIS MIGHT BE A PROBLEM FOR
THE BAND'S CAREER, ESPECIALLY IN THE LIVE SHOWS?
-
PB: Well, me and Ryan are in a couple of
other bands together, mainly Rumpelstiltskin Grinder, http://www.rumpelstiltskingrinder.com.
I don’t see any problems in the future as we have done this for a couple
of years and no problems yet. We even play shows together sometimes.
Do I smell a Solace/ Rumpel tour?
-
JC: We ultimately work together as we are
all friends.
9.WHY DID YOU NAME THE BAND SOLACE IN THE
SHADOWS? DON'T YOU THINK THAT YOUR NAME SOUNDS A BIT ATMOSPHERIC AND MIGHT
MISLEAD THE FANS? THE FIRST NAME OF THE GROUP WAS ARMAGEDDON. WHY DID YOU
CHANGE IT? DID YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH OTHER BANDS WITH THIS NAME?
-
JC: Armageddon is an awesome but not original
name.
-
PB: Plus, there is another band called Armageddon.
The name is a good contrast with what we are like and trying to convey.
10.TELL ME A BOOK OR A COMIC THAT YOU'VE READ
AND YOU'D LIKE TO WRITE A MUSIC ABOUT IT AND WHY?
-
PB: I’d like to write a song about Captain
America but not because of all this pro-America bullshit just because he
gets to fight a dude named Red Skull.
-
JC: He-man would be my choice. I know
what it’s like to go from whimpy, handsome prince to a sword-weilding barbarian
at a moment’s notice.
11.IF YOUR MUSIC WERE AN EMOTION, WHAT WOULD IT
BE? IF IT WERE A PAINTING, WHAT WOULD IT SHOW?
-
PB: If it were an emotion it would be having
a good time.
-
JC: If it were a painting it would be a
hot chick holding up a guitar that is on fire.
12.IF TIME TRAVEL WAS POSSIBLE, WHICH HISTORICAL
PERIOD WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT AND WHY?
-
JC: Early America is so metal. I would
want to go hang out with Benjamin Franklin and see what he thought of our
CD.
-
PB: No way, I would go back to when there
was dinosaurs. Dinosaurs are so metal, all that stomping around and
going extinct.
-
PB: Not metal, just the dinosaurs.
13.IF YOU COULD INVITE FAMOUS MUSICIANS TO PARTICIPATE
IN YOUR ALBUM, WHO WOULD YOU SELECT AND WHY?
-
PB: I would have to choose Nick Barker from
ex-Cradle, ex-Dimmu just because he is so good but since I play drums I
would change that decision to Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom.
That dude rips and knows how to have a good time.
-
JC: Richard Christie, ex-Death ex-Iced Earth,
blows all y’all out of the water.
14.WHICH WORDS DO YOU THINK CAN DESCRIBE YOUR
MUSIC BETTER? WHICH PHRASE CAN SUM UP THE BAND'S HISTORY?
-
PB: Better than what? High Intensity
Metal? Nothing is better than that.
-
PB: This band can be summed up in one phrase:
Dudes. Hangin’ out.
15.THANK YOU! IS THERE ANYTHING MORE YOU'D LIKE
TO ADD?
-
JC: ALL HAIL ALL METAL FOR ALL TIME!
