Speed/Kill/Hate
Overkill is a band famous
to all the thrash metal maniacs. Dave, their guitarist is also known for
his killer and brutal riffs and tunes. Speed/Kill/Hate is Dave's latest
endeavor in the music business with a really brutal and aggressive thrash
metal sound that will knock you out! "Acts Of Insanity" is a piece of extreme
art and so we couldn't lose the chance of asking Dave a few questions about
the album, the band and the affect all these have on Overkill and the vice
versa...
1.HELLO DAVE, FIRST OF ALL I HAVE TO SAY THAT
"ACTS OF INSANITY IS A GREAT ALBUM! NOW, I WANT YOU TO TELL ME HOW YOU
FEEL ABOUT IT, SINCE THIS ALBUM WAS CREATED ONLY BY YOU. DID YOU FEEL FREER
THAN OVERKILL? IN WHICH WAY DID THE OTHER MEMBERS OF THE GROUP HELP YOU?
I feel very good about having a release of
the music that I personally like best. It’s a funny question though because
I actually have played all the guitars on the Overkill records, beside
the live one since “Bloodletting”. So even though I created the guitars
in Overkill as well as Speed\Kill/Hate, the way they are approached is
completely different. In Overkill DD writes the riffs and sends them off
to Blitz and me. From there Bobby writes melodies while I try to make things
more musical and as heavy as I can by adding guitars, parts and harmonies.
We then pass around the ideas and the song builds until it is complete.
In Speed\Kill/Hate for “Acts Of Insanity” I wrote the riffs and music and
Mario wrote the lyrics and melodies. We work the arrangements together
until we both feel that things are right. After this the songs are sent
out to Tim and Derek to get together the parts and arrangements. It does
feel freer because I am able to play just what I want to play musically
in SKH. Because in Overkill the song direction is chosen by DD and in Speed\Kill/Hate
it is chosen by me.
2.I READ IN YOUR BIO THAT THE SONGS INCLUDED HERE
WERE INTENDED TO BE ON THE UPCOMING OVERKILL ALBUM. SO WHAT HAPPENED AND
THEY’VE NEVER REACHED THEIR TARGET? PLEASE DON'T TELL ME THAT SUCH GREAT
SONGS DIDN'T FIT TO THE SOUND OF OVERKILL.
Actually Bobby and DD never considered them
because of publishing issues. I would have loved to use some tunes on the
new record.
3.EXCEPT FROM YOU, YOU HAVE IN THE BAND OTHER
2 MEMBERS OF OVERKILL. DON'T YOU THINK THAT THIS MIGHT CREATE A PROBLEM
BETWEEN THE TWO GROUPS? WOULDN'T BE BETTER IF YOU HAD SOME OTHER MUSICIANS
AVAILABLE EVERY TIME YOU NEEDED THEM?
It really just makes it easier…we all have
the same schedules.
4.A QUESTION SIMILAR TO THE ABOVE IS NOW THAT
YOU HAVE TO CONTRIBUTE IN 2 GROUPS AREN’T YOU AFRAID THAT THIS MIGHT HARM
YOUR CREATIVITY AS A MUSICIAN? WHAT ABOUT YOUR FREE TIME? EVERY HUMAN NEEDS
TO HAVE SOME GOOD REST. IT REALLY SEEMS TO ME VERY DIFFICULT AND TIRING
TO WORK PROFESSIONALLY WITH BOTH BANDS.
I have been writing songs forever and have
way more tunes than I could ever even try to put out on releases. It does
not hinder my creativity because the two bands are approached completely
different. I do stay busy with it but it is what I love to do.
5.LET'S TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ANGER ON ANGER
AND YOUR SINGER MARIO… HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO COOPERATE AGAIN? WHY DIDN'T
YOU DECIDE TO REFORM ANGER ON ANGER SINCE BOTH OF YOU WERE MEMBERS AND
YOU CHOSE TO FORM A NEW BAND?
Mario has always been one of my favorite singers.
He is brutal. I had put SKH together first and then we needed a singer.
Mario was out of the music business at this time. After trying a bunch
of guys, I gave him a call anyway and he said send the tunes up and I’ll
see what I can do. Needless to say he jumped onboard and put his mark on
the stuff with his vocal style.
6.THE BAND NAME IS /SPEED/KILL\HATE/. OK I UNDERSTAND
THE FIRST TERM WHICH REFERS TO THE FAST MUSIC THAT YOU PLAY, BUT WHO DO
YOU HATE AND WHY DO YOU WANT TO KILL HIM/HER? ?
He he… it really just describes the band.
SPEED…fast music/drums
Kill…aggressive/ riffing
Hate…angry, brutal vocal style
7.IS IT POSSIBLE IN ANY FUTURE RELEASE OF YOURS
TO HAVE AS GUESTS THE OTHER 2 MUSICIANS FROM OVERKILL, LIKE D.D.VERNI OR
BOBY "BLITZ"? DID THESE TWO LISTEN TO YOUR ALBUM, DID THEY LIKE IT? WHICH
WERE THEIR REACTIONS? WERE THEY “JEALOUS” PERHAPS AFTER LISTENING TO YOUR
WORK?
Yes…the both have heard it and do like it.
I never really thought about that asking them to play on it because they
could just use some tunes and release them as Overkill.
8.SINCE YOU ARE A MEMBER OF BOTH BANDS, PLEASE
TELL ME WHICH YOU BELIEVE IS THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OVERKILL AND /SPEED/KILL\HATE/.
IF YOU HAD TO LEAVE ONE BAND WHICH WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
At this time I have more than enough time
to do both bands. The main difference is that SKH is all about impact and
speed-thrash metal. While the current direction of Overkill is more about
groove. I would love to record the heaviest and most brutal Overkill to
date but that is not my decision.
9.THE PROMO I HAVE DOESN'T INCLUDE THE LYRICS,
SO CAN YOU TELL ME IN A FEW WORDS WHICH IS THE MAIN TOPIC OF EACH SONG?
WHO WRITES THE LYRICS? DO YOU THINK THAT IN THE FUTURE YOU WILL WRITE FOR
OTHER EMOTIONS AS WELL APART FROM RAGE, REVOLUTION AND HATRED THAT CHARACTERIZE
THE THRASH METAL GENRE?
Mario writes the lyrics so you would have
to ask him on the explanation. However he does writes about the way he
sees life in this day and age.
10. RECENTLY OVERKILL HAVE RELEASED "RELIXIV".
TELL US A FEW THINGS ABOUT IT. WHAT'S NEW IN COMPARISON TO THE PREVIOUS
ALBUM? WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO CHANGE LABEL?
This new record is a mix of things …some old
Overkill style and some new. It is not really like “Killbox 13” to me.
That was a decision by Bobby and DD.
11.WHAT ABOUT LIVE SHOWS? WILL YOU TOUR FIRST
WITH OVERKILL OR /SPEED/KILL\HATE/? WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER FROM YOUR
LIVE SHOWS HERE IN GREECE? IS IT POSSIBLE TO COME WITH YOUR BAND HERE AGAIN?
I would love to come back to Greece. It is
a beautiful country and the fans are great. Right now Overkill goes out
on the 5th of April than we do a couple of SKH shows. After those it is
back to Overkill, etc.
12.HOW DID THE PRESS AND FANS ACCEPT /SPEED/KILL\HATE/'S
ALBUM? WHAT WAS THE BEST REVIEW YOU READ AND WHICH ONE PISSED YOU OFF AND
WHY?
The fans seem to really like this record.
And that is really what matters to me most, and of course that we as a
band like it ourselves. I have read really great reviews and I have read
some that were just ok. The good thing is that even when the reviewer doesn’t
seem to care for it they say it is so heavy and brutal. What more could
you ask for?
13.WHICH ELEMENT IN YOUR MUSIC DO YOU WANT TO
CORRECT OR IMPROVE IN THE FUTURE AND WHY? WHEN SHOULD WE WAIT FOR YOUR
NEXT STRIKE (ALBUM)?
The tunes for the next record are done. We
will find the time this summer between touring to go in and record the
new one. The thing that will be corrected is the direction. The last record
was written before the vocals went down so the focus was more open. This
time I know what Mario can do and this record will be faster and more extreme.
