VULNUS
-
Five deranged
individuals bringing you pure blasting insanity through their first demo
1.TELL US IN A FEW WORDS THE MOST IMPORTANT
MOMENTS OF THE BAND'S HISTORY. WHICH IS TODAY'S LINE UP?
-
Back in the highschool days we were
jamming under the name "Creviced". We started as a cover-band and then
we managed to compose our own songs but due to lack of good drummers the
band was put aside for a while. When Nick entered the band ,the group started
from scratch and was filled with non-stop writing. Under the name "Vulnus"
we recorded our debut demo during July-August 2001 and took part in some
gigs here in Athens. Meanwhile, Costas (Bass) decided to leave the band
for personal reasons, so today's line-up is:
-
Panos (Vocals)
-
Vasilis (Guitar)
-
John (Guitar)
-
Jim (Bass)
-
Nick (Drums)
2.WHY HAVE YOU NAMED THE BAND THIS
WAY? WHY HAVE YOU SELECTED A GORE NAME?
-
First of all, Vulnus derives from the
latin language and means: The wound-the bleeding. This word sounds very
brutal and because of our gore lyrics we decided to name the band like
this.
3.HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSICAL
STYLE? WHICH ARE YOUR INFLUENCES? CAN YOU REMEMBER WHICH BAND OR WHICH
SONG IN SPECIFIC YOU LISTENED TO AND DECIDED YOU WANTED TO INVOLVE WITH
MUSIC?
-
We are playing brutal death metal combining
elements from the American and European scene. Vasilis: For me the most
obvious influence is Cannibal Corpse and Broken Hope. The band that made
me involve with music is Iron Maiden for sure...
-
Panos: My influences are: Deicide &
Sinister. The band that left its mark on me is Candlemass.
-
Nick: Some of my influences are Kataklysm
and Dying fetus. The band that made me involve with extreme music is Pantera.
4.FILL US IN ON THE BAND RELEASES.
ARE YOU STILL SATISFIED WITH THEM? TELL US SOME THINGS ABOUT THE PRODUCTION,
THE RECORDINGS, THE MUSIC...
-
"Exposed to the appalling" is our debut
release. However, John and Costas had a project in the past ,named Malformation,
and released a demo cd two years ago. Although the production is heavy
enough, some changes in the drums section should have been made. However,
we think that we achieved to create something clear and brutal at the same
time. As for the music, the riffs that we are coming up with, are both
"catchy" and technical. Moreover, Nick gives a more groovy feeling with
his great abilities.
5.HAVE YOU PREPARED ANY NEW SONGS?
IS THERE A CHANCE YOU MIGHT CHANGE YOUR MUSICAL STYLE OR EXPERIMENT WITH
OTHER METAL GENRES?
-
Yes, there's some new stuff we 're
working on, about 3-4 songs, composed with the usual Vulnus way. Our new
release is gonna be really brutal!!! We all love extreme music and this
is what we like to play. However, each one of us revels in listening to
different music genres, so you never know what may happen!
6.WHAT ARE THE LYRICS TALKING ABOUT?
MOST PROBABLY GORE STORIES...CAN YOU TELL US SOME THINGS ABOUT THEM?
-
As you said it's all about gore. Some
lyrics are based on splatter movies and some are stories we made up such
as alien abductions, self ignitions etc.
7.YOU REMIND ME A LOT OF CANNIBAL CORPSE.
DO YOU AGREE?
-
Of course, Cannibal Corpse is a band
that inspires the entire death metal scene. On the other hand, we always
try to add our personal elements and not to imitate other bands.
8.HOW ARE YOU THINKING TO PROMOTE YOUR
MUSIC? WHICH SONG OF YOUR DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST IDEAL TO REPRESENT YOU?
-
There are a lot of underground bands
out there so you have to do your best to promote yourself. This means lots
of gigs, contacts with recording labels, trades, flyers etc. "Burnt from
inside" may be the most appropriate song to represent Vulnus. Fast, mid-tempo
grooves, blasting riffs and so on...
9.WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY FOR THE PHENOMENON
OF THE RACIST IDEOLOGIES OBSERVED IN THE EXTREME METAL SCENE? WHICH ARE
YOUR THOUGHTS?
-
Everyone has his own social beliefs
which we respect. Vulnus are not dealing with any kind of political ideology
in their music, we just want to have fun through the music we love.
10.COULD YOU NAME SOME OTHER BANDS
FROM YOUR COUNTRY THAT YOU FIND TO BE VERY INTERESTING?
-
You should check Angrist, From the
Basement, Inveracity, Sun of Nothing... All the bands above have many things
to offer to the Hellenic underground scene.
11.IF SOMEDAY YOU HAD THE CHANCE TO
MEET THE CREATURE THAT CREATED THE UNIVERSE, WHICH WOULD YOUR BIGGEST QUESTION
BE?
-
Panos: Have you created any other life
forms?
-
Nick: Why?
-
Vasilis: What is after death?
12.MANY METAL MUSICIANS ACCUSE POP
STARS FOR THEIR LIFE STYLE, YET WE SEE SUCH BEHAVIOURS IN THE METAL SCENE
AS WELL (BANDS PAYING TO MAKE A COVER FOR SUCCESFUL MAGAZINES, HAVING A
GOOD REVIEW, METAL
LABELS PROMOTING SPECIFIC BANDS
AND GENRES EACH EPOCH,ETC).IS IT MAYBE AFTER ALL TRUE THAT THE METAL INDUSTRY
DOESN'T DIFFER FROM THE POP? WHICH ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THAT?
-
Within the mainstream, metal musicians
and pop stars are equal. They are going after fame and money trying to
become music heroes. On the contrary, the underground ideology is completely
different. There is that D.I.Y. thing and mutual help from each single band.
And according to dying fetus: PISSING IN THE MAINSTREAM
13.IF TIME TRAVEL WAS POSSIBLE, WHICH
HISTORICAL PERIOD WOULD YOU LIKE TO VISIT AND WHY? WHAT WOULD YOU MISS
THE MOST FROM OUR TIME?
-
Vasilis: Well, maybe back in Ancient
Rome to visit their great empire. I would miss my guitar and all the conveniences
we have nowadays.
-
Panos: I just would like to travel
back to 1995 in Tampa Florida (Morrisound Studios) to watch Deicide's-"Once
upon The Cross" recordings from real close.
-
Nick:Ancient Hellas for sure. I would
like to see how these men created such a great civilization. I would miss
the metal scene and my drum kit of course.
14.THANK YOU!HAVE I FORGOT TO ASK YOU
ANYTHING AND YOU'D LIKE TO MENTION?
-
Thanx for the interview. Support the
hellenic underground...
