Mary Rose Tiangco, auntie get U.P. science graduate degrees

BATANGAS CITY (Philippines).
Mary Rose Tiangco of Batangas City and her parents's flower girl, her aunt Rosemary Gutierrez, received their graduate degrees on the same day from the same college (science) of the same school (University of the Philippines).

Miss Tiangco is the youngest of five daughters and one son of Batangan Pubisher Renato Tiangco and his wife, the former Veneranda "Brenda" Gutierrez.

Rosemary Gutierrez, who now resides in Baguio with her husband and two children, is the daughter of Antonio Mangubat, the late medical officer of San Luis, Batangas, and the former Maria Gutierrez, sister of Mrs Tiangco's father, the late judge Mario Gutierrez.

When the Tiangcos were married, their flower girl was young Rosemary Mangubat.

Niece and aunt received their masteral and doctoral degrees, respectively, during the Special Recognition Program for the Graduating Class 2005-2006 of the U.P. College of Science held on Sunday April 23, 2006 at 1 p.m. at the U.P. Film Institute in Diliman, Quezon City.

After the two-hour rites, the class walked over to the Sunken Garden behind the Administration Building (fronted by the Oblation) to join the rest of the U.P. graduating class numbering more than 3,900 in the general commencement exercises of the university.

Miss Tiangco's degree is Master of Science (Environmental Science).

She finished environmental science at the Batangas State University in 2001.

Her master's thesis is titled "Aster-based Study of the Nighttime Urban Heat Island Effect in Metro Manila".

Her adviser is Alfredo Lagmay, assistant professor of the National Institute of Geological Sciences, College of Science, U.P. Diliman.

The newspaper Philippine Daily Inquirer on May 3, 2007 published on its front page a feature article on Miss Tiangco's study. Lagmay penned the article headed "U.P. study confirms Metro Manila getting hotter".

Mrs Gutierrez's degree is Doctor of Philosophy (Biology). She received her bachelor of science's degree in biology in U.P. at Los Ba�os in 1981 and her master's at U.P. in 1993.

Her doctoral dissertation is titled "Acid-Tolerant Rhizobia of Phaesolus vulgaris L from thhe Intensively Cropped Soils of La Trinidad, Benguet, Philippines".

Her adviser is Reynaldo Tabbada, professor of the Institute of Biology, College of Science, the U.P. Diliman. Co-Adviser is Erlinda Paterno, profesor of the Department of Soil Science, College of Agriculture, U.P. Los Ba�os, College, Laguna.
