   Genus Euaspis Gerstaecker

 

     [Family Megachilidae, Subfamily Megachilinae, Tribe Anthidiini]

 

 

 

  • Euaspis Gerstaecker, 1857: p.460; Type species: Thynnus abdominalis Fabricius, 1793, by original designation.

  • Dilobopeltis Fairmaire, 1858: p.266; Type species: Dilobopeltis fuscipennis Fairmaire, 1858 [=Thynnus abdominalis Fabricius, 1793, monobasic.

  • Parevaspis Ritsema, 1874: p.lxxi; Type species: Parevaspis basalis Ritsema, 1874, by designation of Sandhouse, 1943: p.585.

A well known genus that is cleptoparasite on the species of genus Megachile [and earlier known genus Chalicodoma (now under Megachile)] and Lithurgus. Iwata (1976: p. 420) reported that the female usually bore through the cell partition of the host then throws out the host larvae and probably eat host eggs. Then she reworks the pollen mass and lays an egg on each provision deposit and, finally closes the entrance with resin or pollen.

carbonaria [Smith, 1854: p.275 (Stelis)] Author has collected this species from almost whole of Indian territory except western part of Rajasthan, west of Punjab, extreme north in Jammu & Kashmir and in extreme south it is absent in arid regions of Karnataka and Tamilnadu [details of northwestern India in Gupta, 1993]. Outside India: Rangoon, Mandalay, Ceylon Gupta (1993: p.69) reported from Tecoma stans, Derris pinnata, Indigofera sp., Nerium sp. Justicea thysifolius, Cajanus cajan, Crotalaria juncea, Tegetes sp., Adathoda vasica, Acacia sp., Tridex procumbens, Duranta sp., Acanthosperma hispidium, Verbicinia elicinolides, Anthigonum sp., Vitex nigundo, Helianthus cucumeifolius, H. annus, Jacardia mimosaefolia, Tephrosia hamictoni
