Yoh Asakura might look like a layback Junior High School kid. However, he is a shaman with a special ability to communicate with all the souls and spirits and possess them into his body! Yoh came to Funbari, Tokyo to make friends with all of the powerful ghosts and to become the best Shaman ever.

While helping solving the mystery around Funbari district with his human friend, Manta Oyamada, Yoh met the samurai spirits from 600 years ago named Amidamaru. Amidamaru was known as the evil while he lived, but actually Amidamaru was a kind and good person. After Yoh helped him, Amidamaru has pledged his loyalty to serve Yoh. One day, Ren Tao, a boy with the shaman ability same as Yoh, came to Funbari. Ren noticed Amidamaru's spirit was very powerful, so he determined to get Amidamaru from Yoh by challenge him into the fight.
