Chapter One

Sinister sneered at the X-Men on his monitor. The fools constantly interfered with his plans, yet never did anything to make sure he was stopped. Pathetic. Did they truly believe he would simply wake up one day and decide he'd been wrong all these years? More than pathetic.
Delusional. Well this time, the cruel doctor had a surprise for them.
Even as they burst through the door to his lab, the Marauders launched themselves at the mutant team. Each of the murderous group had orders.
Sinister wanted this little experiment to go as smoothly as possible. Which was why he chose Sabertooth to do the honors. Not only would the outcome guarantee the feral killer revenge on Gambit and Wolverine, but the huge man got the added benefit of watching the pair suffer for a long time.
A look around the room showed him all the players were in place; the X-Men were so often easily predictable. Scott Summers was fighting his way toward Sinister with a look of determination; Gambit fought against ArchLight; Storm and Logan were dealing with Harpoon and Manhunter. Just like every other battle. The only thing missing was Sabertooth, who was currently stalking the Iceman.
Bobby Drake was too caught up in helping out various teammates to notice the feral mutant until it was too late. The second Victor laid his paws on the young man, Sinister activated a small panel on the wall. Iceman reacted instinctively when he saw it was Sabertooth who had him; he iced the other mutant's hands and wrists, yet all that did was cause a huge smile to break out on the monster's face.
"Let go of me you jerk," Bobby yelled as he was lifted over the big man's head. Part of him was wondering why the hell he was still alive. Creed's normal way of fighting killed anything in his path. However, one look in the direction he was about to be thrown explained the mystery.
What looked like a pool of light hovered a few feet in front of the now terrified young man. There was no way Bobby wanted to find out how it would feel to connect with the strange sight. Icing all of Sabertooth's upper body, Iceman called for help.
"Guys! I'm in trouble here."
Scott did his best to hold in his irritation. Why was it Drake always had to be the one in trouble? Couldn't he ever learn? Remy and Logan felt horror rip through them as they saw their lover's predicament. Storm prepared to strike with a low voltage lightning bolt. None of them were quick enough, though, as Sabertooth ignored the agony of moving his frozen limbs and threw Iceman at the light with all his strength.
There was no time to create an ice slide or get ready for the impact. One second Creed had him and the next he connected with something that felt like acid; only this acid tore at him from the inside out. Being shredded and pulverized all at the same time. Curling into a ball, Iceman lost consciousness.
In the lab, Sinister smiled and left through one of his many secret passages. It didn't matter if the Marauders died; he could always make more. Now more pressing matters rushed him along. The mini-transmitter Victor had planted in Iceman's belt should let him know how the dimensional portal worked and what kind of world the mutant landed in. Of course, the boy may not have survived. Yet, the evil scientist was betting he had.
Iceman's mutant structure was far more resilient than anyone except he knew?
That was why he picked the otherwise useless fighter.
Meanwhile, in another universe, a desperate battle was taking place. The Justice League and the Earth Forces were fighting the most recent battle against a power mad villain. Unfortunately, the bastard was throwing everything thing he had against the assembled heroes. The defenders found themselves hard pressed to just hold their own.
Nightwing tried to split his attention between Starfire and the creatures overrunning the city. When the battle began, he'd taken to the roof of the nearest building and put his back to the brick wall behind him. A frightening knowledge forced its way into his consciousness. Darkseid had finally pulled off the kidgloves. The dark ruler apparently thought if he could capture Earth before his enemies knew, they would be powerless to do anything. And it looked like he just might succeed.
Wave after wave of his world's warriors poured through portals. Even Superman and Flash couldn't keep up. The weapons pounded on the Man of Steel; keeping him occupied taking out the machines. The foot soldiers killed any in their way and kept all the land bound heroes busy. As for the air, thousands of Darkseid's troops blacked out the sky; all the flight capable heroes couldn't take them out fast enough. The Earth was fast being overrun with murdering aliens.
Even as he watched, a winged monster dropped a struggling young woman to her death ten stories below. There was nothing he could do. Caught up in the scene, Nightwing never noticed a new portal opening a few feet in front of him. The only warning he got was from Batman. It was a frantic yelling of
his name that had him turning at the same time he was struck. Dick Grayson had a brief glimpse of blond hair before he struck the bricks and then there was nothing.
Batman watched in horror as dozens of airborne attackers broke off strafing runs and headed toward his former partner. Looking around he saw no one would be able to reach Nightwing in time; not even the young man's frantic wife.
"I'm sorry," Bruce said softly. "I should never have agreed to train you."
He was about to turn away from the hopeless scene when something strange happened. One of the monsters fell out of the sky encased in ice. Shortly afterward, the rest followed. Gaping, Batman used his radio to contact the others. Something very strange was happening on that rooftop.
That something was a very pissed off Bobby Drake. The young mutant awoke shortly after striking the other hero. The first thing he noticed was his position atop a heavily muscled man. Stammering an apology, the blond noticed the other man was unconscious. At that point, he also noticed the battle raging around them. Things out of nightmares were closing in on him and the helpless man. Some on gliders and some with what looked like bat wings. Each held a weapon trained on the pair.
At first, Bobby tried holding up his hands; after all, he had no idea who was in the wrong. Maybe the guy he landed on was a wanted criminal. Maybe this was some colossal crook round up. In response to the apparent surrender however, the winged-lead creature fired a laser. The beam sliced deeply into
the wall to the mutant's right.
"So much for that," he muttered, icing up. Extending his power, he froze the air around the aggressor's wings, causing him to drop like a rock. This didn't make the others too happy with him and Bobby found himself dodging like crazy. A cry of pain from behind reminded Iceman of the other man. Not knowing how else to stop so many at once, the lithe fighter concentrated and froze the air around all those shooting at him. Turning, he found the costumed man had a new, deep burn along his upper right thigh.
"Shit," he hissed. "I can't believe I forgot you were there."
Part of Bobby insisted that considering his surroundings, he was lucky he wasn't in shock. Movement to his left drew his attention. Two more things on gliders were coming at him. Feeling the strain of having used his ability in such a new way, Iceman opted for an old method to protect himself and the strange guy. He created a slanted wall of ice, deliberately creating a highly reflective surface and hardening it as much as possible.
It worked better than anticipated, unfortunately. As one monster fired, the beam burned only a little of the ice before being reflected, right into the other pilot. Bobby gaped in horror.
"Oh God, I killed him."
The remaining glider pilot gibbered at the blond for a few seconds before making motions with his gun. Following where it pointed, the mutant saw a plane flying high overhead.
"Don't," he cried out, shattering the ice wall. He had to stop the monster?
Instead, he only gave himself a better view as the pilot fired a single burst. Time seemed to slow as the ray of light cut through the air and then the plane. An explosion lit up the sky, illuminating the battles below.
Bobby stared. The thing was now laughing; some sort of strange, high pitched chant came from others like him as they all celebrated the murder. Something inside the Iceman cracked.
Frost had said he was potentially the most powerful mutant on Earth. She said he could become a God if he wanted. Right at that moment, Bobby Drake wanted. That something broke open.
Power like he'd never felt filled the Iceman. It was heady. So many ideas?
So many ways to use his abilities. Carefully he picked out every glider and flying monster in his field of sight. Instantly, they were encased in miniature icebergs. Walking to the edge of the roof, Bobby looked down and machines and monsters for blocks were turned into ice statues.
Again and again he exerted his new found strength. Soon his head was pounding. Every inch of his body burned with agony; still he kept going.
Then there were no more monsters. Just like that. Circles of light like the one Sabertooth had thrown him in appeared all over the place. The aliens poured into them, abandoning the battle. Looking around, Iceman could find no one else to fight.
"About damn time," he groaned, his eyes rolling up.
By the time the first hero reached Nightwing's rooftop perch, the only things there were an unconscious, slightly injured Dick Grayson and a young man wearing nothing more than a black speedo and belt.
"Weird," one of the younger members commented.
"He came out of a portal," Batman growled.
"Reason enough to be very careful with him," Superman said, lifting the mostly naked man.
"Yeah," Starfire smiled, "but he is sooooooo cute."
She flashed everyone a wink before taking off with her husband for the Justice League infirmary.
As Superman flew to same destination, he couldn't help note the young woman was right. It didn't matter, though. If the beautiful boy turned out to be a trap sent by Darkseid, he would be dealt with.
