A radical cultural shift occurred after blues musicians got the bomb. The lines from Hendrix's "Are You Experienced" quoted above make obvious reference to his secret involvement in undersea nuclear testing.

William Burroughs (left) and W.H. Auden (right) -- victims of the"duck and cover" school of criticism promoted by the CIA-sponsored Congress for Cultural Freedom in the post-war era. Burroughs's 2.8 megaton novel The Naked Lunch (1959) vaporized the cultural conditioning of hundreds of thousands of readers. Auden spent much of his time at Oxford preparing such devices as the 48 kiloton poem " 1929" (1929), unsurpassed in rhetorical yield for many years. "Starfish Prime", 1.4 megaton,9 July 1962, detonated at an altitude of 248 miles above Johnston Island. The test created atmospheric disturbances that produced effects resembling the aurora borealis.
