AMBIENT ELSEWHERE

Released 20 September 2008

Ambient ElsewhereCIMA of PA The Philadelphia based Spacemusic duo The Ministry of Inside Things exist outside the confines of the recording studio and in the realm of the live performance. As MoIT, Art Cohen (guitar) and Chuck van Zyl (synths) continue a tradition of bringing an otherwise methodical studio based artform out into the spontaneity of the performance environment. Their third CD Ambient Elsewhere feels dark and isolated when compared to their two earlier releases. While Everlasting Moment explored the edges, dynamics and tension of space and atmosphere, and Contact Point embraced the more unified themes of cosmic, biospheric and macrocosmic interaction, Ambient Elsewhere moves through a strange new territory in-between and outside of traditional Spacemusic. Drawn from a range of chilling themes, this album sonifies wintertime, desolate landscapes and the soul's midnight. Moving through the timbral badlands of the empty quarter, Ambient Elsewhere offers up a courageous intimacy. Always bringing their own influences and innovation to the music process, MoIT produces a sound that is uniquely individual and personal.

The Ministry of Inside Things released their double CD at the performance at The Gatherings Concert Series. The music from Ambient Elsewhere has been drawn from several recent tour performances and features definitive live versions of classic MoIT pieces like "Love Attack" and "Naylor's Run". This set contains two one hour long suites of spacemusic and easily flows through a variety of themes, energy levels and styles.

MEMORYSPACE: INFRARED PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHUCK VAN ZYL

March 2008

Cindy IR Memoryspace: Infrared Photography by Chuck van Zyl will be shown for the month of March 2008 at Brenner's Brew in Bridgeton, NJ. Van Zyl transposes his sensibilities for a visual audience using infrared sensitive black & white film. The show includes formal gardens, seashores, cemeteries and various types of seemingly "abandoned" landscapes.

Chuck van Zyl, a native of the Philadelphia area, came to the medium and subject matter of this show intuitively. One need only hear the art for which he is best known to recognize a common sensibility. Chuck has hosted WXPN radio's Star's End show for over a quarter century, coordinates The Gatherings concert series, as well as records and performs of his own electronic music. With a healthy curiosity towards all things otherworldly and timeless, it's no wonder he's attracted to the odd realm of infrared photography. Seeing his photos for the first time one is struck with the synchronicity or parallelism of presence and absence - belief and suspension of belief. Chuck's work isn't scripted. It speaks to a more fundamental sense of emotions - to wonder and an open-ended world of possibilities.

The opening reception for Memoryspace will be on Friday 7 March 2008 from 6 to 8:30 pm. The show continues through the month of March 2008.
