Q: What are "Web Safe" colors and why do we use them?

"Web Safe" colors are also known as "browser-safe" colors. It is a web standard that lists 216 colors and reserves 40 fixed system colors in its palette. To web developers, this standard is useful in that it ensures colors to appear consistently between different browsers and operating systems, as well as on computers limited to a graphics mode of 256 colors. Also, using these colors prevents the occurrence of dithering, a color matching process that often results in a somewhat spotty quality of image resolution.

Q: In your opinion, what is the biggest problem regarding the use of color on the web? ( What are people doing wrong on a lot of websites that makes them look less pleasant? )

The use of discordant colors, thematically inappropriate colors and lack of harmonious contrast are some of the most common problems encountered. The issue of utilizing an appropriate and attractive color scheme can often be easily overlooked, yet it is a crucial factor to consider when designing and planning web sites.

An effective color scheme for a web site should match its purpose and theme, utilize analogous, complementary or monochromatic "Web Safe" colors, and make judicious use of contrast to illustrate key points.

Q: What is color psychology and why is it important when designing a website?

Color psychology relates to the affectation of a person's mood and / or perception via the use of color. For example, dark colors can be used to express power and strong emotion, and light colors to communicate peacefulness and tranquility. Regarding its use in web development, color schemes can often be tailored to a web site's content, purpose, or the goods and services it provides. It is important for designers to avoid using dissonant and / or inappropriate colors ( i.e. lavender on a web site advertising automotive engine parts, or an excessive use of bright red, an extreme color that is best used sparingly ).

Here are some effective uses of color psychology:

  • Yellow is used on legal pads for its mentally stimulating effect

  • Light green or light blue is often used for medical staff uniforms, due to their relaxing effects on patients

  • Red is often used on road traffic signs ( i.e. "STOP", "DO NOT ENTER" ) to communicate caution, danger and / or warning
