Country Profile Ukraine
ONE OF THE FIRST REPUBLICS to break free from the collapsing Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine has become one of the most stable former Soviet states. Ukraine is also known as the site of the world's worst nuclear accident. An explosion at the Chernobyl power plant in 1986 killed thousands of Ukrainians. Hundreds of thousands more still suffer from radiation-related illnesses and genetic mutations.
