WEEK 1: The World Becomes 'The World,' 1000-1300 CE

We will look at a snapshot of he world in the late 12th century and early 13th century. By using the travels of Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta we can see the four Eurasian cultural areas � Christendom, the Islamic World, the Indian subcontinent and the Middle Kingdom of China. In addition we will see Mesoamerican and sub-Saharan cultures. We will see elements that united various areas as well as factors of division. An examination of Mongol Empires will show how the four Eurasian zones were brought into closer contact and how this set-up greater cross-cultural interactions into the future
