WEEK 3: Chapter 12: Control Commerce and Colonization 1450s-1600

We will explore the early impact of Europeans and their maritime revolution which started in the 15th century and then trace the developments and consequences of the formation of an Atlantic Ocean system that joined Western Europe, the Americas and Africa. We will look at the growth of commercialization and also the entry of the Europeans into an already vibrant Indian Ocean system of trade. In the first instance the Europeans dominated in the second they were merely another player, Yet by 1600 the Europeans conquest and colonization of the Americas was speeding up a shift in economic and political power from eastern European dynasties to the rising Western European nation-states.
