WEEK 5: Chapter 14: Cultures of Splendor and Power, 1500-1780

Here we will look at the cultural developments between 1600 and 1750. New wealth created by an increased transregional trade set the conditions for a growth of culture. Even with the recognition of different cultures many intellectual and artistic developments still called up local traditions and values. Muslims and East Asian societies, though impressed with European technology and means of thought remained convinced that their culture was the most superior. Only the Japanese seemed receptive to cultural borrowings. Europeans were also somewhat chauvinistic because of their accomplishments. Many of their philosophers developed what they thought off as universal principles that could be used in all societies. Be aware that all of this happened in a helter-skelter uneven process and that for the most part only the elites took part in them while the poor and women remained on the sidelines.
