WEEK 7: Chapter 16: Alternative Visions of the 19th Century

During the 19th century there emerged a new global order founded on Enlightenment philosophy, a laissez-faire attitude towards capitalism, the rising nation-state, inventive technologies and industrial organization. Yet this was not an inevitable process and in many places of the world there were alternate movements that challenged this new order. Rebellions started by political radicals or by charismatic prophets, or peasant movements or anti-imperials created a different approach to the emerging status quo. The struggles over the future in the 19th century make this a focal point in world history.
