SCAPEGOATS
Since Fascism as a political doctrine did not appeal to reason but instead to emotions, it was easy for charismatic popular leaders like Hitler to focus attention on weaker peoples in Europe as scapegoats. These people took the blame for the perceived ills of society. As a result, they were systematically victimized by the Nazis. Scapegoating took place in many areas of Europe, not just Germany, and many groups besides Jews were also attacked. But we are most familiar, of course,. with the systematic genocide of millions of Jews known as the Holocaust.
Below is an anti-semitic poster that appeared during Nazi control of Germany. It blames Jewish capitalists for causing the war. (Notice the Star of David on the jacket.) Nazi propaganda attacks on Jews reveal the classic technique of "blaming the victim" -- a technique which the powerful (Nazis in this case) can use with impunity against the weak (Jews in interwar Germany).
