Charlie's Blog #119: Dying and living

Dying and living

5/3/05

The more gazelles, the more lions
the more lions, the fewer gazelles
the fewer gazelles, the fewer lions
the fewer lions, the more gazelles.

Such balance!
Was it planned
or did it just work out this way?
Either way, it makes death seem
not such a big deal.

When the TV says
people have died
I don't feel nearly as bad
for them
as I do for those that have survived them.

The parents, the sisters, the brothers,
the children, the wives, the husbands,
the dear friends.

The ones that died
are the luckiest.
They are either finding out
what the afterlife really is,
or simply experience nothing.
No anguish, no grief, no torment.

Their survivors,
cannot escape
anguish, grief, torment.

I do not grieve for the dead,
I grieve for the living.
Dying is not the problem,
the problem is having not died...
It is for them we should sorrow.
