Dief and Dixie, sittin' in a tree...

"Come on, Dief." Fraser said, exhasperated. Dief's ear flicked towards the sound, but he didn't obey. "Dief, come on. We have to get to your appointment. Shmoozing with Dixie isn't going to help your case, no matter how cute she is." Dief grumbled and gave the little Beagle-Colley cross an affectionate lick before trotting off. She barked after him. Fraser could see Dief's heart ripping in two. He sighed. "All right. You have 2 minutes." As Dief dissapeared over the fence in one mightly leap, Fraser rang at the door. "Hello. My name is constable Benton Fraser. I first came to Chicago on the trail of the killers of my father, and..." He paused, having to smile at the girl's blank stare. "What I'm trying to say is...my wolf quite likes your dog, and I was wondering if I could borrow her for half an hour?" The girl stared at him for a few minutes, then "Mom! There's a wierdo in a red suit with a wolf at the door who wants to steal Dixie!!" Fraser was completely taken aback. "No, no. I don't want to steal her..." The mother came striding up to the door. "Just who the hell do you think you are?!?" She hissed. "My name is constable Benton Fraser. I'm afraid your daughter misunderstood. What I meant to say was that my wolf, Diefenbaker, has taken a liking to your Dixie, and he has a v-e-t's appointment. He refuses to go. I thought that if your dog could come along, he would be more willing to go." The woman eyed his suspiciously for a few minutes, then said "Let me get my coat." Fraser smiled, relieved.

"Dief, let's go." Fraser called. The wolf vaulted over the fence. "I hope you appreciate all the trouble I'm going though for you." Dief litterally stuck his tongue out at Fraser. The woman and her daughter came out and clipped the lead on the dog's collar and followed along, Dief trotting happily next to Dixie. As they walked along, the woman spoke up. "So what exactly ARE you? Some sort of circus clown?" "No. I'm a constable. R.C.M.P. I first came to Chicago on the trail of the killers of my father, and for reasons that, don't need exploring at this juncture, have remained, attached as liaison with the Canadian Conusulate." Pause. "Oh." When they arrived at the vet's office, Dief trotted in and sat down patiently next to Dixie as Fraser went up to the counter and "checked in". The vet came out shortly after and the 2 dogs followed Fraser into the examining room. "Another wolf?" asked the vet. "No, actually, she's a friend's dog. Dief seems quite taken with her." Dief grumbled in embarrassment. "Ah" the vet said and gave Fraser a wry grin. The check-up went by without a hitch, and Dief was given a clean bill of health. The vet took the opportunity to check Dixie over also, and gave her a clean bill as well. "Don't worry, constable, I'll only charge you for your pet." Fraser chuckled and bid the vet good bye.

"So, same time in 6 months?" asked Dixie's owner, as they approached her house. "Really?" asked Fraser, surprised. "Sure. It beats vaccuming!" she said with a laugh. Fraser laughed also. "Sure." Dief barked his approval.
