One of Takumi's friends, Iketani works at a local gas station with both Takumi and Itsuki. Itsuki admires him, as Iketani is leader of the local racing team, the Akina Speed Stars. Iketani drives a Nissan S13 Silvia. At first, Iketani thinks that the Speed Stars are the best drivers in Akina but later his boss Yuuichi tells Iketani of the mysterious driver of an AE 86 who was the fastest driver in his time, and that he suspects that the driver is the owner of the local tofu shop.

In the first episode, the Speed Stars are challenged by the Red Suns from Akagi. During the practice time attack race, the Red Suns with their more powerful cars had no problems overtaking the Speed Stars. Iketani was worried that the Speed Stars were going to lose the race; he was responsible for the downhill race and so far he hadn't clocked a time good enough to beat the Red Suns.

But when Keisuke Takahashi's RX-7 was beaten by an AE 86 and Keisuke shows up at the gas station and tells Iketani about the AE 86 and that he's going to beat the driver, Iketani goes to the Fujiwara tofu shop and begs Bunta to teach him Bunta's driving technique to drive at Akina. Bunta refuses, saying that he can't teach Iketani just by telling him how to do it - it takes a lot of time and practice to develop a good driving technique.

Iketani later goes out to practice on his own at the hill, hoping to improve his time. But while making a turn, a Mitsubishi Pajero going the other way appeared and Iketani barely managed to avoid the vehicle, crashing into the road guardrail. After the accident, Iketani goes back to the tofu shop and asks Bunta to help them in the race against the Red Suns.

On the night of the race, Iketani was surprised when the AE 86 arrived and it was Takumi who stepped out of the car. At first Iketani panicked and asked Takumi where his father was, since he thought Bunta was the one who was going to race. But Iketani allowed him to go on and was very much surprised (and not to mention happy!) when Takumi won.
