THE MATRIX and Divine Truth
Some will want to see this movie because of its high tech computer theme, others because it's an action film. Some may choose to avoid this movie because it contains violence and profane language. Our purpose is not to comment on violence in films. We'll leave that to others, [like those who propose that the Star Wars films are a Satanic plot to brainwash the public into accepting the Anti-Christ and the Beast power of the Bible's Revelation.]
However, truth and violence are not strangers ( "And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force." Mat. 11:12).We found the movie Matrix, filled with divine truths. And we didn't have to squint through a substance-induced haze to recognize them. If you found the concepts in this film to be intriguing, then you ought to read the Book . As Orpheus explains to Neo, "what you see around you isn't the true reality".

# The movie opens with numbers flashing on a computer screen. Someone has initiated an electronic trace for a phone call. We overhear the conversation. The discussion includes speculation whether "he" is the "one".
The trace is completed and police move in on a deserted building to capture the caller, a woman called Trinity. Demonstrating superhuman power and speed, Trinity escapes the police but is pursued by Agents Smith and Jones (the bad guys) who also demonstrate superhuman speed and power. The movie has amazing special effects which we will not attempt to describe. We are concerned only with the story's concept of perceived reality versus true reality .--------snipped--------
INT. NEO'S APARTMENT
It is a studio apartment that seems overgrown with technology.
Weed-like cables coil everywhere, duct-taped into thickets that wind up and around the legs of several desks.
Tabletops are filled with cannibalized equipment that lay open like an autopsied corpse.
We turn towards the center of this rat-nest of technology, . . . we find --
NEO, a younger man who knows more about living inside a computer than living outside one.

SCREEN
Do you want to know what the Matrix is, Neo?Neo is frozen when he reads his name.
SCREEN

. . . Knock, knock, Neo.
A chill runs down his spine and when someone KNOCKS on his door he almost jumps out of his chair.
He looks at the door, then back at the computer but the message is gone.
He shakes his head, not completely sure what happened. Again, someone knocks.
Cautiously, Neo approaches the door.

# Young people in punk style clothing are outside the door. One is an acquaintance of Neo's, and is there to purchase a computer disk.
A girl invites Neo to a party. He declines, until he notices the girl has a white rabbit tattoo on her shoulder. At the party he meets Trinity .-------------------------------------------------------------
Neo stands against a wall, alone, sipping from a bottle of beer, feeling completely out of place, he is about to leave when he notices a woman staring at him.
The woman is Trinity. She walks straight up to him.
In the nearest room, shadow-like figures grind against each other to the pneumatic beat of INDUSTRIAL MUSIC.

# Neo is the on-line nickname for the story's hero. Neo's main interest in life is the internet and within that, he is preoccupied with the mystery of the Matrix . Although Neo's world is familiar with computers, only a few computer hackers have heard of the Matrix and no one seems to know anything about it other than a few rumors.
Neo has a nagging desire to find the answers. At the same time, he's not even sure what the questions are.Throughout history, men have sought to answer the question, "What is the meaning of life?", or, "Why are we here?". Unable to answer that, men settled upon "the love or pursuit of wisdom; the study or science of the truths or principles underlying all knowledge; . . . ", which is the definition of "philosophy".
The Greeks (circa 1000 BC to 338 BC) are credited as the fathers of philosophy. The Greeks were absorbed by the growing Roman Empire between 200 BC and 100 BC, but the influences of Greek thought were felt throughout the world ruled by Rome (to 400 AD).
Those influences have continued until now.
Although Jewish Palestine was ruled by Rome in the time of Christ (4 BC--30 AD) the international language was Greek (in the same way that English is understood in most of the countries of the world today).This brings us to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Jude who presided over the trial of Christ, and who, at the urging of the Pharisees and priests, sentenced him to die. During the interrogation Pilate asks, Are you a king?, to which Christ responds, "To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of the truth hears my voice." (John 18:37).
Pilate responds, in the true Greek fashion, "What is truth?". Here, the word truth is translated from the Greek word aletheia, meaning true, truth, verity [reality] . # Neo is taken into custody by the bad guys and questioned about his knowledge of a terrorist known only as Morpheus . They try to get Neo to cooperate with them, but he refuses. They implant a bug inside Neo's body. He awakens in his own bed and wonders if it was all just a dream. The phone rings.

Across the room, a dark figure stares out the tall windows veiled with decaying lace. He turns and his smile lights up the room.MORPHEUS
At last.He wears a long black coat and his eyes are invisible behind circular mirrored glasses.
He strides to Neo and they shake hands.
MORPHEUS
Welcome, Neo. As you no doubt have guessed, I am Morpheus.NEO
It's an honor.MORPHEUS
Please. Come. Sit.He nods to Trinity.
MORPHEUS
Thank you, Trinity.She bows her head sharply and exits through a door to an adjacent room.
They sit across from one another in cracked, burgundy-leather chairs.
MORPHEUS
I imagine, right now, you must be feeling a bit like Alice, tumbling down the rabbit hole?NEO
You could say that.MORPHEUS
I can see it in your eyes. You have the look of a man who accepts what he sees because he is expecting to wake up.
A smile, razor-thin, curls the corner of his lips.MORPHEUS
Ironically, this is not far from the truth. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Can you tell me, Neo,

This will feel a little weird.There are several disturbing NOISES as he works the needle in.
We MOVE IN as Neo's shoulders bunch and his face tightens into a grimace until a loud CLICK fires and his ears pop like when you equalize them underwater.
He relaxes, opening his eyes as we pull back to a feeling of weightlessness inside another place --
INT. CONSTRUCT
Neo is standing in an empty, blank-white space.
MORPHEUS
This is the Construct.Startled, Neo whips around and finds Morpheus now in the room with him.
MORPHEUS
It is our loading program. We can load anything from clothes, to weapons, to training simulations.
Anything we need.Morpheus walks past Neo and when Neo turns he sees the two leather chairs from the hotel set up in front of a large-screen television.
MORPHEUS
Sit down.Neo stands at the back of the chair as Morpheus sits.
NEO

Chicago exists only as part of a neural-interactive simulation that we call the Matrix.We GLIDE AT the television as he changes the channel.
MORPHEUS
You have been living inside Baulliaurd's vision, inside the map, not the territory. This is
Chicago as it exists today.The sky is an endless sea of black and green bile. The earth, scorched and split like burnt flesh, spreads out beneath us as we ENTER the television.

'The desert of the real.'In the distance, we see the ruins of a future Chicago protruding from the wasteland like the blackened ribs a long-dead corpse.

It started early in the twenty-first century, with the birth of artificial intelligence, a singular consciousness that spawned an entire race of machines.In his sunglasses, we see storm clouds gather.
MORPHEUS
At first all they wanted was to be treated as equals, entitled to the same human inalienable rights.
Whatever they were given, it was not enough.In the circular window of the glasses, EXPLOSIONS light up a bloody battle field.
MORPHEUS

You do?MORPHEUS
I brought you so that you could hear it for yourself. I knew it would help.Neo finishes his cookie.
MORPHEUS

# The attempt to rescue Morpheus is the climatic portion of this film. We won?t discuss the details here, but there is an easy parallel with the death and resurrection of Christ.
Also, Neo was living a normal life until a certain point in time, at which he became aware of a reality beyond the world he could see. He begins training to function in a different world.
After Christ?s birth and his parents? visit to the temple (Lk. 2:22-40), we hear nothing of his life until he is twelve years old (the age of accountability). At that time he is recognized by a few as being different."And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man."
Lk. 2:46-47,52.Even after Christ begins preaching publicly, he mostly avoided direct confrontation with the authorities until it was time for him to be taken and crucified (Mat. 21, Mk. 11, Lk. 19, Jn. 12). Even at his arrest, Judas had to kiss him (Eastern style of greeting) to identify him
to the authorities (Mat. 26:47-50). Prior to this, he often returned to Galilee in Samaria, beyond the reach of the Jerusalem rulers.Morpheus prepared the way for Neo.
John the Baptist prepared the way for Christ (Mat. 3:1-3).Neo warns the Matrix (world rulers) that things are going to change.
Christ declares himself to be the Son of God, the fulfillment of the prophecies about the promised King who will subdue all kingdoms.Here we have a major difference. Neo is going to institute change by force beginning immediately.
This is what the Jews were looking for when Christ came, because they didn't properly understand the prophecies. Even the populace, including nearly all of his own followers rejected him when they realized that Christ was not going to immediately assume the throne and overthrow the Roman domination.
". . .they asked of him, saying , Lord, will you at this time restore again the kingdom of Israel?" (Acts1:6). To which he answered, "It's not for you to know the time."
When he explained that entrance to the kingdom involved imitating him, they did not understand and, "From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him." Jn. 6:60.
At his crucifixion, when they realized that he was really going to die, ". . . Then all the disciples forsook him and fled." Mat. 26:56.What is "reality"? In searching for the ultimate building block of life, we have divided atoms into electrons, protons, neutrons, leptons, quarks and neutrinos. Five neutrinos have been described but after 25 years the sixth one is still undefined (1). It is so small that neutrinos from the sun pass all the way through the earth. Scientists have speculated that the ultimate form may not be physical but spirit.
Within the atom, there is more space than mass, so that what we see as a solid object actually contains more space than solid material.
In other words, objects which we would call "real" are composed mostly of nothing but space.We know that our physical world did not always exist. We are told that it will cease to exist at some point in the future (Rev. 21:1). The physical is temporary. The spiritual is eternal.
"And the world passes away, and the lust thereof: but he that does the will of God abides forever." 1Jn.2:17As Orpheus explained to Neo, "what you see around you isn't the true" reality .
