THE CHURCHWARDEN
THE FRUGAL FLY FISHERMAN

title

In fly fishing the streams, rivers and ponds of Massachusetts I rarely come across a situation where the use of a sink-tip line would be so advantageous as to warrant blowing the fifty dollars it costs to buy one. Yet, there are those times when such a line would be wonderfully nice even though it is not absolutely necessary. Earlier this year I stumbled upon an economical solution so obvious as to make me feel dumber than I really am: namely an old beat up fly line from seasons long gone by. This serendipitous discovery works beautifully, especially on small streams and rivers for nymph dredging or high water wet fly and streamer fishing. An actual sink-tip may take the fly a little too far down, whereas the cheap substitute I am suggesting submerges the fly to a very acceptable depth. Now, I would imagine that if you hang on to the line long enough the whole thing would eventually sink, albeit somewhat slowly, thus lending itself quite cost effectively to a whole new variety of interesting uses.
