POUCHED TOBACCO REVIEWS

Perry Fuller's Churchwarden

GRANGER,
by The Pinkerton Tobacco Company
(Owensboro, KY)

Granger is an inexpensive rough cut burley eminently unsuited to those who taste leans towards the sweet side. As far as I can tell, it is pure tobacco, untouched by additives or flavorings. Personally, I would not smoke this stuff on the stream because the tendency of burley to burn hot would be aggravated by the slightest breeze. Indoors is another story, however. Slow controlled puffs are satisfyingly pleasant. There is aroma, according to my wife, is rich and spicy. On the tongue, it is vaguely nut-like. For an occasional change of pace, or perhaps even as a blending tobacco, Granger would be an excellent choice.

CARTER HALL,
by John Middleton, Inc.
(King Of Prussia, PA)

Carter Hall seems to be a mixture of burley and some sort of Cavendish. In the pouch it looks and smells almost like Granger, but that is where the similarities end. Under the match, the blend burns smoother and sweeter. Virtually bite free, but somewhat indistinct, this tobacco will neither set your mouth on fire, nor distract you from fishing by its flavor. Thus, for a smoke on the stream Carter Hall suffices nicely.
