My First CD!

Cillian Mix

Music is a very important thing, and Daddy wanted to make sure that I got an early introduction to some of his favorite songs and bands. So, Daddy got on the computer and made my very first CD! Some of these songs are ones that Daddy listened to while he was growing up, while others are more recent ones that he loves. Daddy made sure it covered all of the major musical styles as well - traditional metal, progressive metal, hair metal, thrash metal, rap metal, and hard rock!

1. I Wanna Rock - Twisted Sister
What better way to start out my first CD than with one of the greatest rock songs of all time by a legendary rock band like Twisted Sister? A great anthem for anyone whos ever been asked a stupid question like, Why do you listen to that rock n roll music?

2. No Sleep Til Brooklyn - Beastie Boys
Long before such lame bands as Korn and Limp Bizkit, the Beastie Boys were pioneering the rock/rap hybrid. Their landmark album License to Ill altered the course of music history and still stands as one of the most influential albums of all time.

3. Nothin but a Good Time - Poison
Aint lookin for nothing/but a good time/how can I resist - hard to argue with that, isnt it? Too many people work too hard for too long to make too little money, so take the time to have a good time whenever you can. A great working mans anthem by one of the best bands of the hair band era.

4. Out of Reach - Circle II Circle
Bad news - vocalist Zak Stevens left Daddys favorite band, Savatage. Good news - he went on to form Circle II Circle, which is also a great band. This is Daddys favorite song from their first album, Watching in Silence.

5. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
What would an introduction to rock/metal CD be without a song by Black Sabbath, the band that got the whole thing started?

6. Pull Me Under - Dream Theater
This song was Dream Theaters biggest hit and one of the very few progressive metal songs that actually got its video played on MTV.

7. Random Acts of Senseless Violence - Anthrax
Anthrax is considered one of the pioneers of the thrash metal movement. This is Daddys all-time favorite Anthrax song, which coincidentally is on his favorite Anthrax CD, Stomp 442.

8. Reckoning Day - Megadeth
Another pioneer of the thrash metal movement. Daddy pointed out to me once that, while it would have been great if Dave Mustaine had stayed in Metallica, if he had, we wouldnt have Megadeth at all! In fact, Daddy likes Megadeth so much that he and Uncle John went all the way to Cleveland when they were in college to see them live! Its still one of Daddys favorite concerts, and this is his favorite Megadeth song.

9. Requiem (The Fifth) - Trans-Siberian Orchestra
TSO is one of Daddys favorite bands, and though theyre better known for their best-selling Christmas CDs, their album Beethovens Last Night is his favorite. For this song, the band played with an orchestra to record a new version of Beethovens famous Fifth Symphony, combining metal guitars with traditional orchestral sounds. Classical music is great, but it sounds even better on electric guitar! Uncle Clark and Aunt Becki took Mommy and Daddy to a TSO concert for Christmas one year, and everyone was blown away!

10. Shout at the Devil - Motley Crue
Though this song wasnt even released as a single, it remains their best-known track and is one of their best. A classic song by a band that defined the 80s metal movement.

11. Sleep Now in the Fire - Rage Against the Machine
The rock/rap hybrid style that was pioneered by the Beastie Boys was taken to the next level by RATM, who used metal riffs and politically-charged raps to bring their message to the people. Daddy told me that its impossible to pick just one favorite RATM song, but he finally settled on this one. Fortunately I can borrow all of his RATM CDs whenever I want! Yay!

12. Sober - Butch Walker
Nobody writes breakup songs better than Butch, who used to front Marvelous 3, and this song is one of his best. He is one of Daddys all-time favorite singers and songwriters.

13. Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N Roses
For Daddy, this is the song that started it all - Uncle John brought home GNRs debut album, Appetite for Destruction, and the rest is history! GNR is still one of Daddys favorite bands, and he told me that Appetite is one of his top five albums of all time.

14. What You Say - Saigon Kick
Another one of Daddys very favorite bands. Everyone knows them from the ballad Love is on the Way, but they never achieved any other real success. Daddy says this song is a more typical SK song - upbeat tempo, metal riff, with strong vocal harmonies (like Queen or the Beatles). One time Daddy tried to make a mix CD of his favorite SK songs and came up with enough tracks to fill two CDs! SK is another top five band for him.

15. Creeping Death - Metallica
A classic band by any standard, and this is Daddys favorite song by them. Another pioneer of the thrash metal movement.

16. Fire - Jimi Hendrix
Another artist with so many great songs that it was hard to pick just one. Jimi remains the most influential guitarist in history.

17. Get the Funk Out - Extreme
Though best known for More than Words, Extreme actually was primarily a hard rock band, heavily influenced by Queen. This was their first hit song and is one of Daddys favorites. Extreme is another top five band for him.

18. Handful of Rain - Savatage
Daddy has more favorite songs by this band than he can count, but he finally settled on this song for my CD. Savatage is his favorite band, and its members and former members have gone on to two more of his favorite bands - Circle II Circle and Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

19. Hard to Handle - Black Crowes
This was the first hit single for one of the best Southern rock bands ever, and one of Daddys favorite bands. Mommy also highly recommends their episode of the VH-1 show Behind the Music, which features many great quotes from Chris and Rich Robinson, the two brothers who founded the band. Mommy thinks theyre hilarious!

Thats a lot of great music on one CD, but Daddy didnt stop there - he just realized that there was a lot of great music that wouldnt fit onto this CD! To be continued
