For many soldiers, both North and South, it was their last battle. 13,000 Union troops and 10,000 Confederate troops were killed. (more men than in all previous American wars combined)
By the end of the first day the Union troops were all but defeated. However, during the night reinforcements arrived. By the next morning Union forces commanded the field. When the Confederates retreated, the exhausted Union forces did not follow.
