The Magical Wand
by Belle Thurley

The wand is composed of four elements: length, flexibility, outer layer, and
core.

The first element: Length
The length of the wand is the simplest and most self-explanatory of the four
elements. Wands come in a variety of lengths. The particular length of the
wand is chosen by measurements and pure magic. The longest recorded wand in
history was made by Gripensteich Wands of Germany at a length of 235 feet.

The second element: Flexibility
The flexibility of the wand is a very important element. It (inflexible,
pliable, whippy, springy, supple, swishy, flexible, etc.) is obtained in the
craftsmanship of the maker. Most wand-makers prefer to use a variety of
flexibilities to suit their customers. After all wand buying is a very tricky
business because the wand chooses the person.

The third element: Outer Layer
The outside, or "coat", of the wand is what protects to magical core. Most
wand-makers prefer to use wood for the coat. A list of common outer layers:
rosewood- a very rare wood the color of a rose, very good for dueling
ash- a dark wood very useful in plant charms
hornbeam- an orange colored wood found most commonly in areas where dragons
live, said to have special abilities for dealing with dragons
willow- an off-white wood that grows only in the mountains and warm climates
mahogany- a dark brown wood popular with animagus
yew- a yellow wood found only in Asia
beechwood- a tan colored wood found near the ocean, very good for
transfiguration
maple- a dark brown preferred by magical cooks
ebony- a black wood popular with the dark arts
holly- a light brown wood, good for younger wizards and witches

The fourth element: Core
The core of a wand plays the most important role in its magical capabilities.
Below is a list of cores favored by wand-maker Mr. Ollivander of Diagon Alley
in London. The materials used for the core of a wand are too hard to explain.
They possess magical powers that we can only imagine, therefore I have listed
a keyword by each of the cores.
Unicorn hairs- keyword: beautiful
Phoenix tail feathers- keyword: protective
Heartstrings of a dragon- keyword: brave
Hair of a veela-keyword: seductive
