POWER SAWS

Power saws have become an important part of the modern fire service, they have made the task of entering a building to locate the fire easier and have made the process of cutting ventilation holes much faster (holes are often cut in the roof of buildings to allow the heat and smoke to escape). Power saws are also very useful at wildland fires for cutting burning trees and clearing brush. Modern power saws are capable of cutting wood, steel and even concrete.

This shows the two common types of power saw used by the fire service. The chainsaw (lower) and the circular saw (above).

Circular saw

This is a Stihl circular saw. Saws like this can be equipped with wood, metal or concrete cutting blades making them useful for forcible entry and ventilation at structure fires.

The Partner K-12 circular saw is a popular brand of saw that has been around for many years. An example of its popularity is the fact that many firefighters call all circular saws K-12's regardless of the actual brand.

Partner box

Partner saws come with a metal box. The box is well organized and many departments store the saw in the box while it is on the apparatus.

This is another circular saw. Homelite was a very popular brand of power saw in the fire service from the early 1970's through the mid 80's

This is a Dolmar Circular saw. This is an older saw, probably from the 70's. Dolmar is a brand rarely seen today.

Chain saw

This is a medium sized chain saw. Homelite used to be a popular brand of powersaw. This is a popular size saw for fire department use and is appropriate for wildland and structure fire duties.

This is another medium size chainsaw. Stihl is a popular brand with US fire departments. This size saw is useful for cutting small trees and brush on wildland fires but is also useful for forcible entry and ventilation on structure fires.

This is a larger chainsaw used for wildland fires. It is capable of felling larger trees than the saws carried on most structure engines.

The standard bar on chainsaws is straight, this is a bowbar. It is designed for cutting brush so it is usually only found on wildland fire apparatus.

Ventilation saw

This is a Cutter Edge saw. It is a modified chainsaw with a special chain, guard and depth gauge specifically for use at structure fires. The depth gauge is used when ventilating a roof (cutting a hole to allow hot gasses and smoke to escape).

Wildland saw pack

This is a kit for maintaining a chain saw in the field, it includes fuel, oil, tools and extra chains. It also has supplies for felling trees.

Fuel and oil

Powersaws use a mix of oil and gasoline. Since they only hold a limited amount of fuel it is common to carry extra fuel. These are only examples as there are many different types of fuel and oil cans.

Fuel and oil

This is a combination container known as a dolmar. The small compartment holds bar oil, the larger compartment holds fuel.

Fuel and oil

These are small aluminum bottles originally used for camping stoves. These are commonly used in the fire service since they are small and easily carried in a saw pack.
