The
new players fell right into an old habit. Suffolk CC-Selden opened its
men's basketball season last night with a crop of inexperienced faces,
but it didn't matter as the Clippers continued their astonishing
streak.
The 92-62 victory over Lehigh Carbon
CC was the 53rd straight for Selden, a stretch that has lasted nearly
two calendar years and has included a pair of NJCAA championships.
"We just come out and play and win,"
said sophomore Anton Cheese, one of four returning players and last
night's leading scorer with 25 points.
There were a few tense moments in the
second half when Lehigh Carbon closed to 45-42 on back-to-back
three-pointers, but Selden rattled off seven straight points, capped by
Alvin Dennis' dunk to re-establish dominance.
Unlike last season, when the subject
of the streak was taboo, this season it's being embraced and
celebrated. There are signs in the gym inviting students to come to
games and "Support the Streak."
Freshman Clarence Alonzo, who had 12
points and 12 assists, said the team spoke about keeping it going
during pregame. Did that pressure add to any jitters for Alonzo's first
collegiate game? "I never get nervous for basketball," he said.
