The streak was the last thing on Anton Cheese's mind.
Last night's 93-85 loss at Kingsborough was the Suffolk CC-Selden men's
basketball team's first defeat since Jan. 18, 2003. College basketball's longest active winning streak
was snapped at 55.
"A loss came to my head. I didn't think about the streak," said
Cheese, who led the Clippers with 26 points. "I hate losing. It's the
worst feeling.
"We didn't play hard enough. We didn't get the job done. It's as simple as
that. Their whole team outplayed us."
Yes, and none more so than sophomore forward Pierre Narcisse, who had his way
in the paint, scoring 31 points and grabbing 17 rebounds.
Narcisse remembered last year's 50-point loss at Suffolk (3-1, 1-1 Region XV). Kingsborough (4-0, 4-0) was No.
23 in the streak. This time, it wasn't going to settle for being No. 56.
"We're going to remember this win here at Kingsborough for a while,"
Narcisse said.
Alvin Dennis had 17 points and Alex McLean added 10 points, 12 rebounds and two
blocks for Suffolk.
Entering last night's game, Suffolk averaged more than 100 points in beating its first
three opponents by an average of 37. But last night was different. It was the
first time since Feb. 1, 2003 (Monroe scored 91) that Suffolk allowed more than 90 points.
The two-time defending Division III national junior college champion had
trouble doing what it does best: run its opponent right off the court. Plagued
by turnovers and 14 fouls, the Clippers trailed 46-40 at halftime and never led
in the second half.
Suffolk battled to the end but never got closer than three
points. When Kingsborough's Chris Garrick hit a three-pointer with less than
two minutes remaining, that made it 85-77.
Game over. Streak over.
"We're still here to win a national championship," Cheese said.
"Maybe a loss is what it takes to realize that we're not unbeatable."
Added Suffolk coach Rich Wrase: "It's not the end of the
world. Fifty-five is a nice number."
