The Basics

The factory should have placed these changes before letting the car off of the factory line:
o Weld in Subframe connectors
o If a pre-94 car, upgrade to rear disks or at least get better brake pads.
o If a 94 and up car, upgrade to better pads. If cobra equipped, don't worry. The system is pretty good.
o Aftermarket shifter with shift stops to prevent the bending of the transmission forks.

These are the bare essentials that should have been included by Ford.

The late model cobra/mustang has more than enough power for the chassis and suspension that it rides on. Ever hear of the term "build from the ground up"? Try to imagine a 800hp 5.0 (with the stock suspension) running and plowing through an autocross course or burning out sideways at a dragstrip. Not good. Especially when stock motored cars turn in substantially better course times or faster ETs. As you go though the dragstrip and autocross sections, remember that can pick and choose to your own application, but these are the basics that I go by and have found what most people at the racetracks have had great success at.

Dragstrip

  • Ring & Pinion Change for your application
  • Drag slicks or Drag Radials (Nittos are my favorite)
  • Auburn or better rear end with TA rear cover
  • Better axles (31 Spline)
  • Aluminum Driveshaft w/driveshaft loop
  • Battery relocation kit

    Autocross

  • Springs/Struts/Camber Plates
  • Rear End: Upper/Lower Control Arms or Torque/Panhard setup.
  • Front End: Griggs K-Member (There are no better setups!)
  • Weight Distribution Issues (battery/fiberglass hood)
  • Cooling issues (bigger or better (aluminum) radiator)
  • Polyurethane bushings at the endlinks and swaybar
  • Aluminum bushings for the steering rack.

WSC at Road Atlanta w/pit stop. Watch this race. It is cool!

    Engine

The 94-95 cars are better built from from the factory then the 86-93 cars, but that comes at the expense of extra weight. However, same engine...same mods will improve all.

Here, IMO is a pretty good budget minded combination:

  • 75mm Pro-M Mass Air Meter ($200)
  • 65mm Throttle Body (That is as big as I would go for all
  • applications..including blowers) ($180)
  • Cobra or edlebrock upper/lower Intakes (what $400?)
  • Heads: Your choice..anything is better than stock (>$1000)
  • 1 5/8 Shorty headers ($190)
  • Flowmaster Mufflers ($100)
  • H-pipe - Up to you ($100 for hpipe/$400 for one with
  • cats)
