BHS Plaque |

The BHS Plaque was a senior gift of the class of 1957. It was a stroke of genius. Prior class had all provided concrete benches under the cover walk way to the school gym and buses. They were welcome for taking a load off and cramming for the first period after lunch, for visiting and for waiting for the school buses to arrive. But the BHS Class of 1957 broke with tradition and threw out the old paradigm mold when they came up with the BHS Plaque. In the mid 50's the movie "Rebel Without A Cause" featuring Natalie Wood and James Dean was a box office success. It was a story about high school students growing up and the memorable feature was their plaque in the floor located at the entrance to the school. One of the cardinal rules was you could not step on the plaque at all cost, Those students that did found they had a little extra after school homework or instruction. Yes it became a symbol of BHS and the alumni. The BHS Plaque a real proud symbol to cherish for years to come. |
Pictured above is the Senior Gift Committee of the BHS Class of 1957. After a lengthy debate the BHS Plaque was approved overwhelmingly. But little did we know at the time that it would become so famous or many years later other classes would say they came up with this idea? Yes, today the BHS Plaque and other great memorabilia from the old Canal Zone can be seen at the Panama Canal Museum in Seminole, Florida. Click below to take you to the Panama Canal Museum. It has been a real pleasure for me to share some of my memories of those days of at my Alma Mater Balboa High School in the Canal Zone. Now in closing let me share of few memories in verse: |
The Canal Zone and BHS Class of 1957 I awake with the dawn Memories tumble from my past What to do or not Harley-Davidsons roar by Slick pavements beneath our feet Rainbow color flowers abound It is raining hard Great for sleeping Kid, all night long Today... Top of the morning! Time passes so quickly Darkness falls like a dark curtain Is it time for bed La Chiva y el Interior Sol y playas y natacion Es bueno no es hacie Tis true it is magic The beaming smile of a small child It is like a miracle The early wake up call It must be the chatter of the rain I feel very sleepy tonight It has started to sprinkle I wonder if it will rain all day Oh well Siesta time everybody Rain on the dark horizon Smell the dampness in the sweet air Flowers perk up and stretch Long flashing legs Shimmering beacons Lost is found again |
