The Navy Chief
USS Chief -MCM-14
A great movie about one of the core values  of all sailors... Honor
A Short Talk with Chief Petty Officers:

1915 Bluejackets Manual 2nd Edition... In a section entitled a short talk with Chief  Petty Officers, the essence of being a Chief is summarized:

When you are promoted to Chief Petty Officer, your status changes even to a great extent than it changes when you were promoted from the ranks to petty officer.

Along with all these changes comes a very great change in your responsibilities as well as the absolute necessity for a different point of view. If you forget the changes of this nature, you altogether fail in your duties to the government.

The aim of this little talk is to dwell upon this new point of view, this increased feeling of responsibility, this sense of duty, which impels you to do a thing not because you have to do it nor because it ought to be done... but because it is your duty to do it.
Dare to dream and chart your course. Set your goals in your professional, personal and spiritual life. Your goals are the navigational charts that guide you and show you what is possible in your life. Life has more meaning when you are motivated, set goals and take charge!
No matter how great the warrior he is, a Chief cannot do battle without his Indians.
The CHIEF, in the days of great naval explorers, the amount of leadership required to drive sailors too continue to function was tremendous. The threat  of falling off the edge of the earth, being eaten by sea monsters and being enticed and killed by mermaids was overwhelming. Granted, a great deal of intimidation, strength and fear assisted in the effort but were not entirely effective when one individual was trying to persuade several. Things have greatly change since those days but the Chief is still expected to get the job done through his people. The best advise I ever got from an old Master Chief was..."Take care of your people and they will take care of you." That is so true!
I was so fortuante to have served in the US Navy, the best Navy in the world as a Senior Chief. Over the years I discovered that you should never tell your people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity. Of course if they don't know how to do it... then it is up to you as a Chief to train them.
The Bowline is a knot that all people should know how to tie. It is easy to tie and it is a very reliable knot. Learn to tie it could save your life or of someone you know.
The day I made Chief was the highlight of my Naval Career. I have done other things but to become a Chief in the US Navy had to be up there with getting married. It is a chapter in my life that I will never forget. I would encourage all who enlist in the US Navy to strive to become a Chief. In this picture you see me in the middle with my sponsor and my Commanding Officer. The place was the Chief's Club at Naval Station Panama Canal in September 1987.
GO Navy!
