Strawberry tree berries
I first noticed a tree with red, pulpy berries growing by the apartment dumpster. I couldn't resist trying one, after having a vivid dream that they were edible. I took a tiny taste, then half a berry, then one, then two, and os on over a period of a week. I was finally convinced they were safe to eat. But what were they?
The name for it is "strawberry Tree" (Arbutus Unedo.) They originate from southern Europe in the Mediterranian area. In Spain a wine is made from the plant; Horace and Ovid praised the tree as well. But I had seen them growing everwhere in the Northern California where I live, planted simply as an ornamental. Mostly they are ignored, falling to the ground where they rot and are eaten by the birds. They must be mixed with sugar to be at thier best. Then they taste like real strawberries! Many people dislike the taste of them right of the bush. They make excellent smoothies, margaritas and daquiris; also good ice homemade ice cream. Below is a recipe for custard.
Mix one cup half and half, a quarter cup sugar, and 2 eggs; heat in a saucepan untill slightly thickened, then add a cup of mashed berries. Stir them in untill well mixed, pour into bowls, and allow to set.
