Pierre Comeau l'aîné dit l'Esturgeon

Pierre Comeau had two sons named Pierre, the younger Pierre le jeune dit des Loups-Marins and the eldest was Pierre l'aîné dit l'Esturgeon. The last lived at rivière du Dauphin, an area known then as "l'Esturgeon". According to Stephen White, Professor and Genealogist at the Centre of Acadian Studies' University of Moncton, Pierre Comeau l'aîné received his dit name because of where he lived.

Our ancestor Pierre Comeau l'aîné dit l'Esturgeon is the second son of the pioneers Pierre Comeau & Rose Bayon. He was born in 1652 probably in Port-Royal. Around 1677, he married in Port-Royal Jeanne Bourg, daughter of Antoine Bourg et Antoinette Landry. We will note on the map of Port-Royal in 1700 that Pierre Comeau l'aîné dit l'Esturgeon lived on the 'rivière du Dauphin' about seven kilometers from the village of Port-Royal.

In 1689, war was declared between France and England. Boston's New Englanders took advantage of this by trying to invade Acadia one more time.

"Burn and Lay Waste" Nelson Surette

Admiral Phipps arrived in Port Royal in 1690 with 700 English soldiers. The fort was defended by 70 French soldiers who eventually surrendered.

Inhabitants of Port Royal and ‘Des Mines', locked in the church and with the threat of burning down their houses, were forced to sign a Declaration of Fidelity to the Crown of England, but still refused to bear arms against their French comrades.

Even though the French settlers had given in and signed the Declaration, for twelve days afterwards the New Englanders destroyed Acadia. The Church and Presbytery were razed. Cattle was destroyed, houses pillaged and 28 of them burned to the ground. The settlers were in a disastrous situation and they moved to Jemseg on the St-Jean River.

In August 1695, we find the 'X' mark of Pierre Comeau l'aîné when he swears allegeance to the Crown of England in Port-Royal. England held possession of Acadia until 1697 when Acadia becomes French territory again by the Treaty of Ryswick.

Unfortunately, peace did not last for long as war was again declared between France and England in 1701. This war ended in 1713 and by the Treaty of Utrecht, Acadia and Newfoundland will remain henceforth British territory.

Pierre Comeau l'aîné dit l'Esturgeon will live until his late seventies when he died April 8, 1730.

Jeanne Bourg

The ninth child of pioneers Antoine Bourg & Antoinette Landry, Jeanne Bourg the younger was born around 1659.

According to Stephen White, Jeanne's father, Antoine Bourg, is the pioneer of the Bourg Family of Acadia. It is believed he was born in France around 1609. There have been no documents found to indicate where he was born but some believe he is from Martaizé, in the province of Poitou. We know that Antoine came to Acadia in the early 1640's or earlier. Around 1642, he married Antoinette Landry and together, they had at least eleven children. According to the 1671 census, Antoine Bourg was a farmer. He passed away between October 5, 1687 and the census of 1693. (White 167) Centre d'études acadiennes

Jeanne' mother, Antoinette LANDRY was born in France around 1618. She was the sister of the pioneer René Landry l'aîné. Marie-Antoinette Landry married Antoine BOURG around 1642. She died after 1693 when she is mentioned as a widow in the census. (White 36)

In 1677, Jeanne Bourg was 18 when she married Pierre Comeau l'aîné dit l'ESTURGEON in Port Royal where they settled. Jeanne will give him 18 children between 1678 & 1705. All of which make it to adulthood except the last child named Jacques who will only live one month. Our ancestor Ambroise Comeau will then become the youngest of 17 children.
