Antarctic Book List.

This list of books is almost directly from an old book list that the Antarctica NZ library had considered as good general reading for those interested in Antarctica. They are not necessarily specific to New Zealand bookstores but they may be easier to locate if in New Zealand. Many of the older books are well out of print and inquiries should be made to your local library about their availability for borrowing. Antarctica NZ in Christchurch NZ is a great place to start but I hear that this resource is being shut down and many of the books are going to Canterbury University. Contact Antarctica New Zealand and find out.

Personal Favorites: from someone who reads for pleasure.

Mike, (one of our engineers ) has read many books on Antarctica. Some of the ones he likes are listed below, along with a few of his comments.

  (1) Readers Digest Antarctica Great Stories from the Frozen Continent
  (2) Beryl Bainbridge The Birthday Boys
  (3) Sarah Wheeler, Sara Terra Incognita Travels in Antarctica
  (4)  Roland Huntford Shackleton
  (5)  Roland Huntford Scott and Admundson
  (6) Cherry-Garrad, Aspley The Worst Journey in the World
  (7) Ernest Shackleton The heart of the Antarctic
  (8) Ernest Shackleton South
  (9) Captain Robert F. Scott The Voyage of Discovery
  (10) The GREENPEACE Book of Antarctica

The Reader's Digest book ANTARCTICA: "Great Stories from the Frozen Continent " gives a good overview of the different expeditions. On top of that, there is a vast number of publications of diaries by members of various expeditions from the "heroic age" of Antarctic exploration. They are quite fun to read since they tell more of the day to day routine and differ significantly from the official reports.
