Honoring
Private William Henry H. Lowe

1st Georgia Volunteer Infantry Co. H (Ramsey's)
2002 and 2005
The first ceremony August 2002, when the wooden marker was placed.
Private William Henry H. Lowe Died January 6, 1862 at  Shockey's Tavern in the small hamlet of Oakland, Morgan County, Va(WV).  Lowe was a  member if the 1st Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment Compnay H (Ramsey's), who was marching with Jackson's Army of the Valley District on his infamous Bath/Romney Campaign.  Lowe a native of Lumpkin County Georgia was just 18 years old when he died roughly 500 miles away from home.  It is assumed that Lowe succumbed to sickness caused by the harsh winter weather and freezing tempetures. He was left with "old Ms. Shockey", and when he died was buried in her family plot at Oakland Methodist Cemetery, not far from the Tavern. Local history states his grave was marked by a small sandstone which has since dissapeared, and in 2002 the Ambrose family along with the 5th VA. Co. K placed a small wooden marker on Lowe's possible grave site.  On January 8, 2005 the Ambrose's the 5th VA and the Berkeley Border Guards Camp 199 SCV placed a marble headstone provided by the government, in a ceremony at the church.  Almost bringing to a close the mystery of the soldier of Oakland.
The new stone Dedicated January 8, 2005. It was 143 years and two days after Lowe's death.
Members of the 5th and camp 199 form and honor guard by the grave before the new stone was unvield.
