AFP: U.S. urges ‘immediage release’ of elderly American Korean war veteran held in N.Korea.
Merrill Newman, an 85-year-old grandfather w. heart problems, became the 7th detained by North Korea since 2009.  Why did the DPRK decide to pluck Newman off his plane leaving Pyongyang Oct. 25?  Allegations of “hostile acts.”  More like, ‘whatever we can get away with; want more attention, visitation,’ that, as of Sat., N.Korea gave the Swedish embasy “consular access” to Newman, since the U.S. ‘has no formal ties w. N.Korea.’

The official KCNA news agency claimed Newman had committed crimes against the nation both during his participation in the Korean War but as a recent visitor there as well… Newman had intended to meet surviving soldiers and pray for the souls of the dead— and here, effectively pushed into making a formal ‘apology,’ dated 11.09, at nearly 600 words, some of the English broken.  Quoting KCNA, I realize that I cannot be forgiven for my offensives but I beg for pardon on my knees by apologizing for my offensives sincerely toward the government and the Korean people and I want not punish me.

U.S. National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden has also urged them to release Kenneth Bae, the 45-yr.-old tour operator who was arrested a year ago, and sentenced 15 years’ hard labor (torturous conditions in a literal prison nation) for ‘seeking to topple the government.’

People Magazine: Paul Walker, star of The Fast and the Furious, 40, dies at the scene of a fiery car crash in California, on the outskirts of Valencia, about 3:30 a.m. PST.  The passenger, a friend, also died in the Porsche crash (into a light pole).  Investigators have looked into whether or not Walker was drag racing.  He had finished most of his acting shots as Brian O’Conner in Fast and Furious 7.

According to a post on Walker’s official Facebook page, the actor had been attending a charity event for his organization Read Out Worldwide. … He was a passenger in a friend's car, in which both lost their lives. We appreciate your patience as we too are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news. Thank you for keeping his family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised on where to send condolences.

Walker is survived by his daughter, Meadow Rain, 15.  She was at the charity car show, according to an eye witness.

The Denver Post — ‘Godspeed Scott Carpenter’: Boulder astronaut remembered as inspiring figureSecond American to orbit Earth honored where life’s journey began by Mitchell Byars.

The second American to orbit Earth piloted the Aurora 7, May 24, 1962, had faced the challenges of space flight, including the high drama when a key instrument on board had failed.  Such challenges had forced him to question the integrity of equipment down the road, but it didn’t wipe the smile off his face.  Now-Senator John Glenn, the man that preceeded him by months, recalled at Carpenter’s funeral how he was always the most curious and enthusiastic of the men.  He was head and shoulders above us in enthusiasm in what we were doing. … Scott’s curiosity knew no bounds… He was exporing an unknown, and that was a way of life with him.

Recalling one of the other missions, a thirty-day stint where he was subjected to enormous pressure from gasses, including… helium.  It was like having a high-pitched, metallic conversation with Donald Duck, he said before launching into an impression of what Carpenter sounded like over the phone.

Carpenter, 85, died 10.10 at his Denver home in Vail, due to complications from a stroke he’d suffered several weeks earlier.  Video: Military honors at astronaut Scott Carpenter’s funeral, 2013.11.02.
