Dash the Deer

Inspiration and Ideation

Up to this point I had only ever made stuffed animals for my nieces and nephews, but when one of my good friends had her baby, I couldn’t resist making this darling deer. I definitely took some liberties with the colors, but hey! That’s half the fun!

Starting Off With Innovation

I was definitely in a time crunch on this one. My friend’s little boy came early, so when I thought I had a month, he said otherwise. Thankfully this pattern is a super fast work up and I already had everything I needed for it. Though because I’m me, I couldn’t just keep things simple.

Skeins of Yarn

Once I had my colors picked out, I knew that I wanted to embroider Little Boy’s initials and birthday on the feet of the deer. I’d never attempted embroidering on crocheted fabric, or yarn in general, but what could go wrong?

Letters Embroidered on Yarn

It actually went pretty well. I still wish it would have been a little neater, but with the chunky fabric, the Janome was doing its best. By the end I had two feet I was mostly happy with. The colors are the wedding colors of my friend and her husband just a few months earlier!

Creation

With the feet figured out, I could get down to the rest of the deer. The only part that gave me some trouble was the face. It started working up crooked! Turns out I messed up the foundation stitches. Once I went back and fixed them, it came out perfectly!

I got super excited to see the head done. I knew it was going to be so cute! But once I could put him together, I was so happy with him. He was exactly what I’d been going for. Look at how cute he is!

It didn’t take long to stitch him together and I made sure to grab a few glamor shots before sending off to his new best friend!
