fascination..
Throughout the years, the Discus fish has been developed to possess colours once only familiar with the kaleidoscope. Making its first appearance in the aquarium trade in the 1930s, it was then known as the Pompadour Fish and was only afforded by the rich and elite.
Today, the discus fish is no longer considered a rarity. The discus has truly come a long way in terms of development and breeding methodology. Various mutations have also evolved from the breeding of these fishes. It is a constant challenge for the breeder or hobbyist to breed and raise these delicate little creatures, but the fulfilment it brings to the committed are boundlessly rewarding.
The genetics of this fish, similarly as complex as all living creatures, has a great part to play in the ardent persuits of all enthusiasts. The modern hobbyist tries to understand the temperaments of their fishes and cross-breeds discus of various kinds to try and create a new strain they could call their own. The area of genetics of the discus has not been widely studied and researched upon, and it is largely left to experimentation that new breeds are concocted today.

The breeding of the discus fish is very much an artistic endeavour which has appealed to many as a hobby very much like the arts has to the artistically-inclined. I suppose it is the immense challenge to create a fish, and the delicate beauty of the discus which keeps hobbyists like
myself going.

My fascination began when I was a child, when at 8 yrs of age Daddy bought me 6 Turquoise Discus at the price of $10 each from a neighbourhood aquarium shop. The 6 sweeties were such charming little things in my living room. A year on, a pair had formed and bred, and it was then that I began reading up alot about the discus. The journey continued years on, but without much financial ability, I wasn't able to get the best of what the market had to offer. It was only recently that I began purchasing better strains, and with much challenge of all sorts in terms of disease and breeding, I am able to understand the fish better.

Thus it is my ardent want to share this
fascinating hobby of mine with you,
my fascination -
