The Big Island of Hawaii
Jack and brother John visited this enchanted island Christmas, 1989. We stayed in the Volcano House on the edge of Kilauea crater and then, in a hotel on the water of Hilo Bay. We saw snow-covered mountains as we swam in the pool, breathed the sulfurous vapors of the volcano, stood on black sand beaches watching hot lava boil the sea, and hiked through lush jungles to orchid-lined waterfalls.
We also ate chocolate-covered macademia nuts, drank Kona coffee, and returned to Oahu to swing in Margaret and Ace's hammock overlooking Diamond Head.
