Orlando Bloom was born in Canterbury, Kent, England, United Kingdom on January 13, 1977. His mother reportedly named him after the 17th century composer Orlando Gibbons. As he grew up, Orlando believed that his father was Harry Bloom, who died when he was four. Later on in his life, his mother finally told him the truth: his father was Colin Stone, a family friend.

His interest in acting was largely inspired by his mother. As he and his sister were growing up, his mother pushed them to appreciate the arts. When he began reciting poetry and prose, Orlando began to realize that he had a deeper love, acting. While attending St. Edmund's School, Orlando did excellent in photography, sculpture, and of course, theater. Then, at age 16, he moved to London to act with the National Youth Theater for two years.

At age 18, Orlando recieved a scholarship to train with the British American Drama Academy. After graduating, Orlando acted in two shows and was offered roles in several more. Instead of taking these roles, though, he decided to attend the Guildhall of Music and Drama. In 1998, at age 21, Orlando had a terrible accident. While climbing on a friend's roof, Orlando fell and broke his back. The future at this time looked bleak for him, for doctors said that he would never walk again. Fortunately, after undergoing surgery, he walked out of the hospital with the assistance of crutches only 12 days later.

Finally, we come up to his true time to shine. Only three days before he was to graduate from Guildhall, Orlando landed a role made just for him. At that time, he was cast as the beautiful elf, Legolas, in the new Lord of the Rings film trilogy, leading him to be what he is today.
