My Model Horse Collection

Hi Folks,
My lifelong interests are horses, computers, photography, gardening, reading (lots of sci-fi and non-fiction) and "people-watching". I've had a love of horses for the longest time (from the age of about five, I think), so this page will mainly feature my latest version of loving the four-legged beasts.

Since I no longer have the room or time for real horses, I collect model horses, especially the ones made by Breyer Molding Company. There are several other companies that make model horses in different materials and in different price ranges, but Breyers are fairly realistic looking and are in the 'medium' price range.

My addiction for collecting models really started in the summer of 1996 when I wandered into a certain Holiday Inn to see what Breyerfest was all about. As a child I had a Breyers appaloosa Family Arabian Mare amongst my toy horses, so I already knew that Breyers made plastic model horses. Never in my wildest dreams though would I have imagined the sight I saw that night. For well over two hours, I wandered around, probably with my jaw slack, just looking. I'd guess there were over 10,000 plastic horses in that motel that night. Model horses were everywhere! Yes! Lots of people as crazy as me! A few months later, I bought one and was hooked. Collecting is addictive!!

For the first time, in the summer of 1997, I went to the *real* Breyerfest which is usually held the last weekend of July at the Kentucky Horse Park, located just north of Lexington, KY.. There was so much to do and see that I didn't get to see everything even though I spent most of three days 'on the run'. I haven't missed a Breyerfest yet and am counting down the days to BREYERFEST 2004!

Besides 'collecting', you can DO things with these models. When I get a chance, I spend my spare moments making tack and props, and taking pictures of my model horse collection. I've entered a few photo shows (The idea is to take pictures of your models which make them look as real as possible and then mail them into a showholder) and I've been to a couple of "live shows" which means that you actually take your horses to a show site to be judged.

Here's a couple of my model horse photos:

and one of my stablehands.

Some people also repaint or remake their horses into one-of-a-kind models. I've finally started trying to remake and paint. I find that I really enjoy remaking (read mangling) the models even though it takes a tremendous amount of time.

Here's two 'custom' models that I did:
My first custom horse was
a Breyers traditional Black Beauty.
This is a custom Breyers classic size
Man O War model.
