April '06 was National Garden Month!!!
This page is devoted to Remembering the Monarchs and the
home gardens and National Parks that support them.
In her article, "Journey to Mexico's Monarch Valley"
Diana Nellans writes:
Billions of Monarch Butterflies migrate each year down to Mexico
to their ancestral home. Unfortunately, Mexico is faced with a lot
of environmental challenges, including unchecked industrialization
and deforestation. Even inside the monarch butterfly reserves, local
people have managed to cut one-fifth of the trees during the last
decade.
In both the United States and Canada, monarchs face a more subtle
threat, mass destruction of their host plants. Milkweed, the only
plant on which monarch larvae feed, is considered a noxious weed
by some, which means it is often destroyed.
